Adolescent and Teenage Health
Adolescent & Teenage Health Services in Narangba
GP Care for Teenagers and Young People
The teenage years bring significant physical, emotional and social changes. Health concerns can also become more personal as young people begin taking a greater role in understanding and managing their own health.
At Narangba Station Medical Centre, our GPs provide age-appropriate healthcare for adolescents and teenagers in Narangba and surrounding communities. Young people can speak with a GP about concerns ranging from puberty, periods and acne to mental health, sexual health, sleep, nutrition and ongoing medical conditions.
We also understand that healthcare during adolescence can involve both young people and their families. Our GPs aim to provide a respectful environment where teenagers can ask questions, discuss concerns and gradually become more involved in decisions about their own healthcare.
Healthcare That Changes as Young People Grow
Health needs can change quickly during adolescence. Sometimes an appointment is for a physical symptom or illness; other times a teenager may simply need reliable medical advice about something they are experiencing or are unsure about.
Our GPs can assess health concerns, provide age-appropriate information and treatment, and arrange further investigation or referral when required. Parents and carers can remain an important part of healthcare during these years, while teenagers are also encouraged to become increasingly involved in discussions about their own health.

GP Support Through the Teenage Years
Adolescence can bring questions about physical changes, emotions, relationships, lifestyle and health that young people may not always feel comfortable discussing elsewhere.
A GP can provide reliable health information, assess concerns and help teenagers understand when treatment, monitoring or further support may be useful.

What Are Adolescent Health Services?
Adolescent health services provide healthcare that considers the physical, emotional and social changes that occur during the teenage years.
As young people mature, their healthcare needs can expand beyond childhood illness and development. They may have questions or concerns about puberty, periods, sexual and reproductive health, mental health, skin conditions, sleep, nutrition, alcohol or vaping, or managing an existing medical condition more independently.
GPs can provide a first point of contact for many of these concerns. Depending on the reason for attending, an appointment may involve assessment, treatment, preventive healthcare, health education, further investigation or referral to another health professional.
At Narangba Station Medical Centre, we aim to involve young people appropriately in their healthcare while recognising the important role parents and carers can continue to play throughout adolescence.
Adolescent & Teenage Health Services We Offer
Teenagers do not need to be unwell to speak with a GP. Adolescence is a period of significant change, and having access to reliable medical advice can help young people better understand their health and raise concerns when they arise.
Our GPs provide general healthcare for adolescents and teenagers and can assist with both short-term concerns and ongoing health needs.
Our adolescent and teenage health services include:
Adolescent & Teenage Health Checks
A GP appointment provides an opportunity for teenagers to discuss their general health and raise concerns that may be difficult to bring up elsewhere.
Depending on the reason for attending, a consultation may include physical health, mental wellbeing, sleep, nutrition, physical activity, medications, immunisations or other areas relevant to the young person’s individual circumstances.
Puberty & Physical Development
Puberty can involve significant changes to the body, emotions and everyday life. Teens may have questions about whether the changes they are experiencing are expected or concerns about the timing or progression of puberty.
Our GPs can discuss puberty and physical development, including growth, periods and menstrual concerns, body changes and other symptoms that may need further assessment.
Adolescent Immunisations
Several vaccinations are recommended during adolescence under Australia’s National Immunisation Program, with many routinely offered through school vaccination programs.
Our team can review immunisation history, discuss vaccines that may be due and assist with eligible catch-up vaccinations where appropriate.
Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing
Adolescence can bring changes in mood, relationships, school pressures and social experiences. Some young people may experience anxiety, persistent low mood, stress, difficulties coping, bullying, body image concerns or other changes affecting everyday life.
Our GPs can assess mental health concerns, discuss available support and treatment options and arrange referral to psychology or other mental health services where appropriate.
Sexual & Reproductive Health
Teenagers and young adults may have questions about sexual health, relationships, contraception, periods, sexually transmitted infections or reproductive health.
Our GPs can provide age-appropriate information, assessment and healthcare in a respectful setting. Where appropriate, this may include discussing contraception options, STI testing, menstrual concerns or other sexual and reproductive health matters.
Acne & Skin Concerns
Hormonal changes during adolescence can contribute to acne and other skin concerns. Acne may range from occasional breakouts to more persistent or severe symptoms that can cause discomfort, scarring or affect confidence.
Our GPs can assess acne and other skin concerns, discuss appropriate treatment and arrange specialist referral when required.
Sleep, Nutrition & Healthy Habits
Sleep patterns, eating habits and activity levels often change during the teenage years and can affect physical health, concentration, mood and general wellbeing.
Young people can speak with a GP about sleep difficulties, nutrition, physical activity and other lifestyle concerns.
Discussions may also include alcohol, smoking, vaping or other behaviours that could affect their health.
Ongoing Health Conditions
Teenagers living with conditions such as asthma, allergies, diabetes, eczema or other ongoing health concerns may gradually take a more active role in understanding and managing their treatment.
Our GPs can provide ongoing medical care, review medications and management plans, coordinate with other healthcare professionals and help young people develop greater confidence in managing their own health as they grow older.
Privacy, Confidentiality & Adolescent Healthcare
It is common for teenagers to become more involved in conversations and decisions about their healthcare as they mature.
Depending on a young person’s age, maturity, understanding and circumstances, a GP may spend part of an appointment speaking with them independently. This can give teenagers an opportunity to ask questions or discuss matters they may find difficult to raise in front of others.
Privacy and confidentiality are important parts of healthcare. Your GP can explain how confidentiality applies to the individual young person, including circumstances where information may need to be shared because of safety, consent or legal requirements.
Parents and carers can still play an important role in supporting a teenager’s health, and our GPs aim to involve families appropriately while respecting the young person’s growing independence.
What to Expect at an Adolescent Health Appointment
What happens during an appointment will depend on the young person’s age, circumstances and reason for attending. During the consultation, your GP may:
- Ask about current symptoms, medical history and general health.
- Give the young person an opportunity to raise their own questions or concerns.
- Perform an appropriate examination or assessment where required.
- Discuss physical health, mental wellbeing or lifestyle factors relevant to the consultation.
- Provide information about treatment, prevention or managing health concerns.
- Recommend investigations, follow-up or referral to another health professional where appropriate.
Parents or carers may be involved in the appointment, and the GP may also suggest speaking with the teenager independently for part of the consultation where appropriate.
