Who Can Benefit from Prostate Health Support?
Prostate health matters for men at any stage of life and especially as we get older because changes to the prostate become more likely with age. Book a prostate check if you’re over 40 and interested in preventative prostate health, over 50 and interested in prostate screening or have a family history of prostate cancer.
Speak to your GP if you experience symptoms like urinating frequently, weak stream when you pee, struggle to pee, waking multiple times through the night to pee (Nocturia) or a burning feeling when you pee. Some guys just want advice on prostate support, maintaining a healthy prostate or peace of mind around prostate cancer and enlarged prostate symptoms.

Understanding Prostate Conditions & Diseases
Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting Australian men. In many cases, prostate cancer develops slowly and may not cause symptoms during the early stages.
Early signs of prostate problems can include:
- Changes in urination
- Frequent urination
- Difficulty starting urination
- Weak urine flow
- Blood in urine
- Pelvic discomfort
Our GPs can discuss prostate cancer screening options, including PSA tests, individual risk factors, and referrals for further investigation where necessary.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called an enlarged prostate, is a non-cancerous condition that becomes more common with aging.
Common enlarged prostate symptoms may include:
- Frequent urination in men
- Difficulty emptying the bladder
- Weak urine flow
- Night urination (nocturia)
- Urgency to urinate
Treatment options vary depending on severity and may include monitoring, medications for enlarged prostate, lifestyle adjustments, or specialist referral.
Prostate Screening & Diagnosis
PSA Test
PSA stands for prostate-specific antigen. It is a blood test that measures the level of PSA in your blood. High levels of PSA can be a sign of prostate issues like inflammation or enlargement of the prostate or prostate cancer.
Our GPs can advise whether PSA testing is suitable for you based on your age, symptoms, family history and general health. We will also discuss the pros and cons of prostate screening, current guidelines around age and prostate screening and any individual risk factors you may have which could impact your care and monitoring plan.
Digital Rectal Exam (DRE)
A digital rectal exam (DRE) allows a GP to assess the size and texture of the prostate gland. While some men may feel uncomfortable discussing this examination, it can be an important part of assessing prostate health when clinically appropriate.
Our doctors ensure all assessments are conducted professionally, respectfully and confidentially.
Lifestyle & Prevention for Prostate Wellness
Healthy lifestyle habits may help support prostate health and overall men’s wellbeing.
Diet for Prostate Health
A healthy diet full of vegetables, fibre and good fats may promote prostate health and men's health overall. Prostate-supportive foods include tomatoes and other foods high in lycopene, leafy greens, fatty fish high in omega-3s, nuts and seeds, and whole grains. Healthy eating may also promote healthy weight, heart health and healthy aging.
Manage Weight & Prostate Health
Maintaining a healthy weight can contribute to better overall health and may help reduce the risk of certain prostate conditions.
Alcohol and Prostate Health
Moderating alcohol intake can support general health and well-being. Excessive alcohol consumption may contribute to urinary symptoms and broader health concerns.
Exercise and Prostate Health
Exercise can also promote weight control, improve circulation, decrease inflammation, help regulate hormones and encourage healthier urinary function. Being active plays a vital role in men's general well-being and prostate care.
Smoking and Prostate Risk
Smoking is associated with many health risks and may contribute to poorer outcomes in men diagnosed with prostate cancer and other chronic conditions.
Nutrition & Supplements
Men often ask what supplements help with prostate health and natural alternatives to aid prostate health. The most talked about nutrients for prostate care include Zinc and prostate health, Lycopene and prostate health, vitamin D and prostate health and omega-3 fatty acids.
Some supplements may help support general health but always check with your GP before taking any vitamins or supplements. They can advise what’s safe, suitable and effective for you based on your personal health needs and prescription medication.
Prostate Cancer Treatment Options & Management
How we approach treating prostate cancer or other prostate issues hinges on a range of things, like your age, your overall health, how severe your symptoms are, what the test results show, and your personal wishes. Every patient is unique so management of your condition will be personalised to fit your specific needs and health objectives.
Treatment options may include active monitoring with regular testing, medication to help with enlarged prostate symptoms, lifestyle changes or referral to our urology specialists to evaluate and manage your care. If needed, we will coordinate with specialists to manage your prostate cancer treatment here at our clinic.
