Pneumonia Vaccination Narangba

Pneumococcal disease is caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria and can lead to infections ranging from middle ear and sinus infections through to pneumonia, bloodstream infections and meningitis. While anyone can develop pneumococcal disease, the likelihood of serious illness is higher for babies, older adults and people with certain medical conditions.

At Narangba Station Medical Centre, we provide pneumococcal vaccinations as part of our comprehensive vaccination and immunisation services. Our GPs will review your vaccination history, age and medical circumstances to determine whether pneumococcal vaccination is recommended and which schedule applies to you or your child.

Book a Consultation today.

Pneumococcal vaccines are funded through the National Immunisation Program for eligible patients, including children, adults aged 65 years and over, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults aged 25 years and over, and people with certain medical risk conditions. Please note, however, that whilst you may be eligible for the vaccination for free under the National Immunisation Program, a consultation fee will still apply.

To arrange your consultation, call (07) 3521 4333, book online using the button below or download the AMS Connect app. All pneumococcal vaccinations begin with a GP consultation.

Where is Pneumococcal disease most common?

Pneumococcal bacteria are found throughout the community and many healthy people can carry them in their nose or throat without becoming unwell. Infections occur throughout the year, although pneumococcal disease is more common during winter and spring.

Children under 2 years of age and older adults have a greater risk of pneumococcal disease. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and those with certain chronic illnesses or conditions affecting their immune system can also be more vulnerable.

At NSMC, your GP can check your vaccination history and determine whether pneumococcal vaccination is recommended based on your age and individual health needs. Call (07) 3521 4333 or book your consultation online.

How is Pneumococcal spread?

Pneumococcal bacteria can pass between people even when the person carrying the bacteria does not appear unwell. Transmission usually occurs through close contact with respiratory secretions.

Coughing & Sneezing

Droplets released from the nose or mouth when a person coughs or sneezes can carry pneumococcal bacteria to others nearby.

Nasal Secretion & Saliva

The bacteria can spread through contact with saliva or mucus from the nose and throat, particularly during close personal contact.

Close Contact

Spending significant time around someone carrying pneumococcal bacteria can increase the opportunity for transmission.

Pneumococcal Symptoms

Symptoms differ depending on which part of the body has become infected. Pneumococcal disease may cause:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Headache
  • Tiredness or drowsiness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Ear pain or sinus symptoms

More serious pneumococcal infections can cause meningitis, pneumonia or infection of the bloodstream. Seek urgent medical attention by calling 000 promptly if you or your child become significantly unwell.

Long Term Complications

Many pneumococcal infections respond well to treatment, but invasive pneumococcal disease can become serious. Possible complications include:

  • Pneumonia and sepsis: Pneumococcal bacteria can cause severe lung infection and, in some cases, enter the bloodstream. Serious infections may require hospital treatment.
  • Meningitis and ongoing health problems: Pneumococcal meningitis can be life-threatening and may cause lasting complications such as hearing loss or neurological problems.

Pneumococcal Vaccination Side Effects

Pneumococcal vaccines are generally well tolerated. Some people experience mild reactions following vaccination, including:

  • Pain, redness or swelling where the injection was given
  • A small lump at the injection site
  • Mild fever
  • Tiredness
  • Muscle aches

Most reactions are temporary and improve within a few days with serious allergic reactions rare. Your GP will discuss your medical history and any relevant precautions before vaccination. Contact your doctor if you experience symptoms after vaccination that concern you.

Fees & Process

All pneumococcal vaccinations at NSMC begin with a GP consultation. Your doctor will review your medical history and previous immunisations and determine which vaccine is recommended for your age and circumstances.

Eligible patients can receive pneumococcal vaccination funded through the National Immunisation Program. If you are not eligible for a funded vaccine, your GP can discuss whether private vaccination is suitable and explain any associated costs. Please note that consultation fees may still apply when the vaccine itself is funded.

Call (07) 3521 4333 or make an appointment online. For further information about consultation costs, please visit our Fees page.
