What Are Childhood Immunisations?
Childhood immunisations are vaccines that protect babies and children against some serious infectious diseases. They work by introducing the immune system to viruses and bacteria, so it learns how to fight them off before the child becomes sick.
Immunising your child is safe and means they are much less likely to get infectious diseases like measles, whooping cough, polio and chickenpox. Making sure your child's immunisations are up to date protects them and helps protect the rest of the community.
National Immunisation Schedule (Australia)
Childhood vaccinations in Australia are provided through the National Immunisation Program (NIP). The NIP provides a timetable of vaccinations that are administered through the different stages of your child's development.
Ensuring your child is covered by this schedule means they'll be protected before they're vulnerable to contracting illnesses. Our GPs are up to date with these national recommendations and can help ensure you are meeting your child's immunisation needs.
Immunisation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children
Under the National Immunisation Program, kids identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander might qualify for extra shots and earlier defence.
These additional immunisations offer enhanced defence against illnesses that disproportionately impact certain communities, such as pneumococcal disease, the flu, and hepatitis A.
Speak to our GPs about the recommended immunisation schedule to ensure your child is getting the vaccines they need when they need them.
Vaccines Your Child Needs (By Age)
Your child has vaccinations at various stages throughout childhood to keep providing cover as they get older.
Right from birth your baby will receive vital early vaccines. From 2 months, 4 months and 6 months they will receive vaccinations to help prevent whooping cough, hepatitis B and pneumococcal disease.
The vaccines received at 12 months and 18 months work towards boosting protection against measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox. Booster vaccinations are then administered around the age of 4 years to keep your child protected before starting school.
We can walk you through exactly what vaccinations your child will receive at each stage and keep a record of them.

Queensland Immunisation Guidance
Childhood immunisations in Queensland are managed under the National Immunisation Program (NIP), which provides guidelines for recommended vaccines.
The Queensland Government also provides state-based support services such as:
- Community immunisation clinics.
- School-based vaccinations.
- The Australian Immunisation Register (AIR), which serves as the official log of your child's immunisations.
Ensuring your child is up to date with their vaccinations also assists with meeting childcare and school enrolment requirements under the “No Jab, No Play” ruling.
If you’re not sure where you are at with your children’s vaccinations, or have missed some vaccines, our team can help provide you with the information you need to get back on track.
Why Immunisation Is Important
Immunisation helps protect your child against potentially serious diseases. Immunisation also reduces disease throughout the community, keeping babies and others who are vulnerable (for example people with weakened immune systems) safer.
Vaccines used in Australia are proven to be safe and effective, and immunisation is one of the most important forms of preventative health care. It's also worth noting that immunisation records are usually required for childcare and school enrolment, so keeping up to date is important.
What to Expect During Your Child’s Vaccination
Your GP will discuss your child’s medical history with you and talk you through why they’re recommending a vaccination. You can ask questions and raise any concerns before the vaccination takes place.
We’ll administer the vaccination as comfortably as possible, working with you to keep your little one calm and relaxed. We’ll also give you straightforward aftercare advice so you know what to expect.
Personalised Immunisation Care
Every child is different, and we take a personalised approach to their care. Whether your child is following the standard schedule, catching up on missed vaccines, or has specific medical considerations, our GPs will tailor recommendations to suit their needs.
