This service is provided by Dr Alexander Browne. Please call (07) 3521 4333 or book online with Dr Browne.Learning that you are pregnant can bring different emotions and deciding what to do next is a personal and private choice. At Narangba Station Medical Centre, Dr Alexander Browne offers confidential, non-judgemental medical abortion consultations for adults up to 9 weeks (63 days) of pregnancy considering an early termination of pregnancy.
During your consultation, Dr Browne will discuss your circumstances, assess your clinical needs and explain the options that may be available to you. The pre-termination assessment includes a supportive discussion about the request for termination, relevant medical and reproductive history, confirmation of gestational age and pregnancy location via referral to an ultrasound clinic, and any additional investigations considered appropriate.
What to expect?
Your first consultation may include:
- Discussing your medical and reproductive history.
- Reviewing your medications and relevant health conditions.
- Discussing your pregnancy options.
- Assessing your individual clinical needs.
- Explaining the options that may be available.
- Discussing possible side effects and complications.
- Discussing pain and symptom management.
- Explaining when and where to seek medical assistance.
- Discussing any investigations or external referrals.
- Explaining consent, follow-up care and available support.
How It Works
Early medical abortion in Australia uses a two-step medication regimen to safely terminate an early pregnancy of up to 9 weeks (63 days). This also involves a series of appointments and checks to make sure the process is appropriate for you, that you understand what to expect, and that you have the right follow-up and support in place.Â
Here's what patients can expect from the process:
1: Initial Consultation
Your first appointment is a private consultation to discuss your pregnancy, your options and your individual circumstances. Dr Browne will explain the assessment process, answer your questions and discuss what may happen next.
2: Ultrasound & Blood Tests
Dr Browne will advise whether imaging, pathology or other investigations are appropriate. If an external referral is required, the provider may charge a separate fee. Blood collection may be available on-site where clinically appropriate.
3: Second Consultation & Medication
Dr Browne will review the available clinical information and discuss whether the services offered by the practice are appropriate for you. If you decide to proceed with an appropriate treatment option, Dr Browne will explain the process, possible risks, expected effects, aftercare requirements and consent arrangements.
4: Follow Up Care
A follow-up appointment will be arranged to assess your recovery and whether the termination is complete. Dr Browne will review any symptoms or concerns and discuss whether further assessment, treatment, referral or support is required.
What to expect after taking the medication?
After taking the second medication, cramping and vaginal bleeding are expected as the pregnancy passes. Bleeding is generally heavier than your usual period at first and may include blood clots. Cramping can also be stronger than normal period pain. Both should gradually reduce as the process progresses, although lighter bleeding or spotting may continue afterward. Temporary side effects can also include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Hot flushes
- Mild temperature.
Dr Browne will explain what to expect during your initial or second consultation and provide clear instructions about pain relief, what symptoms are expected and when you should contact the practice or seek urgent medical care.
When to seek medical help?
Dr Browne will provide you with specific aftercare instructions and you should contact the clinic or seek medical advice if you are concerned about symptoms such as:
- Bleeding that seems unusually or excessively heavy
- Severe or worsening pain that is not adequately controlled with recommended pain relief
- Persistent fever or feeling significantly unwell
- Dizziness, fainting or weakness associated with bleeding
- Ongoing pregnancy symptoms
- No bleeding after taking the second medication when bleeding was expected
- Any other symptom that concerns you.
For a medical emergency, call Triple Zero (000) or attend your nearest hospital emergency department.
