Health Assessments for Riders, Drivers, Trainers and Stablehands
Narangba Station Medical Centre conducts medical assessments required by the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC). If you're applying for or renewing a licence as a Thoroughbred Trackwork Rider, Approved Rider, Harness Driver, Thoroughbred Trainer or Stablehand, you'll need to submit a completed medical certificate as part of the licensing process.
These assessments help QRIC ensure that all licensed participants are fit to carry out their duties safely, for their own well-being and that of others working around horses and racetracks. Our GPs are familiar with QRIC requirements and can complete the necessary medical forms efficiently.

How it Works
Here's how to obtain your QRIC Health Assessment Certificate:
- Step 1: Book an appointment at Narangba Station Medical Centre.
- Step 2: Print the correct forms for your role (see forms below)
- Step 3: Complete your personal details before your appointment.
- Step 4: Attend your appointment and bring your forms with you.
On the day of your appointment, your GP will conduct a comprehensive medical assessment tailored to your QRIC role (e.g. trackwork rider, approved rider, harness driver, trainer, or stablehand).
The GP will complete:
- The (HARNESS) Compulsory Medical Examination – Medical Practitioner form, which includes minimum examination criteria specific to harness roles.
- The QRIC Health Assessment Results Form, used across both thoroughbred and harness licences.
If you’re unable to print the form ahead of time, please arrive 15–20 minutes early, and our reception team can provide a copy for you to complete before your appointment.

If you're a jockey, trackwork rider or thoroughbred stablehand, you only need the QRIC Health Assessment Results Form.
Fees & Medicare Rebate
The cost of a QRIC Medical Certificate at Narangba Station Medical Centre starts from $220 (Inc. GST).
Please Note: Medicare does not cover the cost of these assessments. If your employer or stable is requiring the check, you may be eligible to claim reimbursement through them. For more details on pricing and consultation fees, please visit our fees page.
What To Expect?
Your QRIC health assessment will take approximately 15–20 minutes. The examination is designed to ensure you're medically fit to participate in the racing industry and to identify any conditions that could pose a risk in high-intensity or safety-sensitive roles. The exact checks required may vary depending on your QRIC licence category, medical history and the current QRIC Medical Examination Report. Your GP may recommend additional information, examination or investigation where appropriate.
Your QRIC health check will typically cover the following:
1. Vision and Hearing
Your GP may check your eyesight and hearing to assess whether you can safely recognise hazards, judge surroundings and respond to warnings while riding or working around horses. QRIC considers significant vision or hearing problems where they may affect your ability to safely perform your racing role.
2. Cardiovascular and Respiratory Function
Your heart and lung health will be reviewed in relation to the physical demands of your role when working with horses. This may include checking your blood pressure and pulse, examining your heart and lungs, and discussing conditions that could affect your ability to safely manage physical exertion both when riding or when working.
3. Neurological Health
Your GP will consider any conditions or symptoms that could affect balance, consciousness, coordination or reaction time. This may include a history of dizziness or unsteadiness, epilepsy or seizures, stroke, loss of consciousness or other neurological conditions relevant to safely riding, driving or working around horses.
4. Musculoskeletal Fitness
Riding, driving and trackwork can place significant physical demands on the body. Your GP may assess your movement, strength and any injuries or musculoskeletal conditions that could affect your back, neck, joints or limbs, as well as your ability to stand, walk, sit, grip or safely perform your usual racing duties.
5. Mental Health and Cognitive Function
Your GP may discuss any health conditions that could affect alertness, concentration, judgement or your ability to respond appropriately in a safety-sensitive environment. The assessment focuses on whether any current symptoms could affect your ability to safely perform the duties associated with your particular racing licence.
6. Current Medications or Substance Use
Please tell your GP about any prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines and supplements you currently take. Your doctor will consider whether any medication could affect physical functioning, alertness, concentration or judgement. Relevant substance use history may also be discussed where it could have an impact on workplace safety.
7. Historical Medical Conditions
Your GP will review your relevant medical history and any current health conditions that could increase risk or affect your ability to perform your role. This can include conditions such as diabetes, previous injuries or other health concerns relevant to riding, driving, training or stable work. Further investigations may be recommended where required.
8. Complete Medical Certificate
Following the consultation, if you meet the eligibility requirements, your GP will complete the QRIC Medical Assessment Certificate, which you can then submit with your licence application or renewal. More often than not, this is provided on the same day. In the unforeseen circumstance that this is not possible, the certificate can be sent to you.

Bookings are available from as early as 7AM on weekdays and Saturday. We are also open Sunday afternoon and late evening on Tuesday and Thursday until 8:30PM.Â
