Asthma Care Narangba, QLD

Personalised GP Care for Asthma at Every Stage

Asthma affects your airways and can cause wheezing, coughing and chest tightness and shortness of breath. While asthma can occur at any age, symptoms may vary from person to person. Some will experience triggers throughout their lives, while others may develop asthma later on in life.

At Narangba Station Medical Centre, our doctors offer tailored asthma management. From understanding what asthma symptoms you experience, identifying triggers and managing your condition to prevent it from being persistent.

We can help with everything from childhood asthma to asthma reviews, asthma action plans, plus spirometry testing. Our doctors can help whether your asthma is something you’ve just started experiencing or if you’ve had chronic asthma for a long period of time.

Helping You Breathe Easier

Living with asthma can sometimes mean managing symptoms, medications and triggers without being completely sure whether your asthma is as well controlled as it could be.

If you’re experiencing ongoing symptoms or an asthma flare-up, we can also assess your condition and recommend appropriate treatment or further care where needed.

Call us on (07) 3521 4333, book online, or use the AMS Connect app to schedule an appointment.

Personalised Asthma Care for the Whole Family

Asthma affects people differently at every stage of life. Symptoms can vary from childhood to adulthood. Some people aren’t diagnosed until later in life. Our doctors provide asthma services for children, adolescents and adults. They will work with you to explain your condition and help you manage it as you age.

Our doctors can provide assistance with asthma diagnosis and assessment, prescribe medication for asthma and help develop an asthma action plan. Other services include performing spirometry tests and providing ongoing care for chronic asthma. Should your condition require further investigation, your GP can talk to you about getting a referral to a suitable specialist.

What Is Asthma?

Asthma affects the airways, the tubes that carry air into and out of the lungs. If you have asthma, your airways may become inflamed and extra-sensitive, and they may narrow when you come into contact with certain triggers.

This can lead to symptoms including:

  • Wheezing
  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness
  • Difficulty breathing

Asthma symptoms can flare up periodically and then go away. Triggers that set off asthma symptoms can include: respiratory infections, allergies, exercise, smoke, dust, pollen, weather changes or other irritants in the environment.

Some people have occasional asthma symptoms, while others must take medicine daily to control their asthma. Recognising your personal symptoms and triggers is key to controlling your asthma.

When to See a GP?

If you regularly experience coughing, wheezing, breathlessness or chest tightness, it’s worth speaking with a GP. These symptoms can have several possible causes, so an appropriate assessment can help determine whether asthma may be contributing.

You may also benefit from an asthma consultation if:

  • Your asthma symptoms are becoming more frequent.
  • You’re waking at night because of coughing or breathing difficulties.
  • You’re relying on your reliever medication more often.
  • Your asthma is affecting exercise, work, school or everyday activities.
  • You’ve recently had an asthma flare-up.
  • Your current asthma medications don’t seem to be controlling your symptoms.
  • You haven’t reviewed your asthma management plan for some time.

Regular reviews can help identify whether your current treatment is still appropriate and give you an opportunity to discuss any concerns with your GP.

If you are experiencing severe difficulty breathing, particularly if your reliever medication is not helping, seek urgent medical attention.

Asthma Care and Treatment Available

At Narangba Station Medical Centre, our GPs provide a range of services to help you understand and manage asthma.

Asthma Assessment and Diagnosis

If you are experiencing symptoms that you think may be asthma-related, your GP can help assess your symptoms, triggers and medical history. They may recommend lung function testing or further investigations where necessary.

Asthma Medication Review

Asthma medications can help control your symptoms and prevent asthma flare-ups. Having a medication review allows you to discuss with your GP whether your current treatment is working for you and whether any changes are needed.

They can also make sure you understand how to correctly use your medications and when to take them.

Childhood Asthma Treatment

Asthma symptoms in children can be worrying for parents and carers. Our GPs who care for families can treat asthma in children and provide ongoing management if your child experiences asthma symptoms.

We can assess your child for asthma, talk through triggers, review medications and advise on what to do if your child’s symptoms change.

Asthma Spirometry Testing

Spirometry is a type of breathing test which measures how much air you can breathe out and how quickly you can breathe it out. Spirometry can be used to help diagnose asthma as part of an asthma assessment. Your GP can also use it to monitor your lung function over time.

Book an appointment with your GP to discuss whether spirometry testing is right for you.

Asthma Action Plans

A personalised asthma action plan contains information for you about managing your asthma. This can help you understand what your normal symptoms are, identify when your asthma is getting worse and understand what to do if your symptoms change.

Your GP can help create or review an asthma action plan tailored to you.

Asthma Flare-Up Treatment

An asthma flare-up is when your asthma symptoms are worse than usual. Your GP can examine you if your symptoms are increasing like coughing, wheezing, chest tightness or breathlessness. They can assess your symptoms and provide next steps.

If your symptoms are severe or you are finding it hard to breathe, you may need urgent medical attention rather than booking an appointment.

Ongoing Asthma Management

Managing asthma isn't just about controlling your symptoms when they happen. Reviewing your asthma can help you keep on top of your symptoms and recognise changes earlier, before they start to affect your day-to-day life.

If you have ongoing asthma symptoms, your GP can write a chronic asthma management plan tailored to your symptoms, triggers, medication and circumstances.

We can review how your asthma is going and change your management plan if needed. The goal is to help you feel confident managing your asthma at home, work, school and during your daily activities.
