RSV Vaccination Brisbane

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that affects the lungs and airways. Whilst most people recover like they would from a cold, an RSV virus can become more serious for younger babies and older adults. In fact, RSV viruses are one of the leading causes of hospital admissions for infants in Australia with immunisation the best way to lower the risk of severe illness.

At Narangba Station Medical Centre, we offer RSV immunisation for patients across North Brisbane as part of our vaccination and immunisation services including the Abrysvo vaccine during pregnancy, Abrysvo or Arexvy for older adults, and Beyfortus for infants. Whether you are expecting a baby, caring for a newborn or managing your health as you age, our GPs can help you choose the right option.

Book a Consultation today.

Many patients may be eligible for free RSV immunisation under the National Immunisation Program or the Queensland Paediatric RSV Prevention Program. Your GP will check your eligibility during your consultation.

To schedule your consultation, call us on (07) 3521 4333, click below to book online, or download the AMS Connect app today. All RSV immunisations start with a GP appointment.

Stay protected from RSV

RSV spreads easily, especially in the cooler months. Babies under 6 months and adults over 75 face the highest risk of severe illness. Protect yourself and your family by booking a consultation with one of our GPs today.

Where is RSV most common?

RSV circulates in Queensland every year. Cases usually rise in autumn and winter, but RSV can spread at any time. Almost all children catch RSV at least once before they turn 2. Adults can catch it again and again, because infection doesn't give lasting immunity.

RSV can spread most easily within:

  • Childcare centres, kindergartens and schools
  • Households with young children
  • Aged care facilities and hospitals

At NSMC, our GPs can help you plan the right timing for RSV immunisation, whether you are pregnant, caring for a newborn or over 75. Please contact us on (07) 3521 4333 or book a consultation online.

How is RSV spread?

Like more viruses and diseases, good hygiene can reduce the risk of infection and spread. However, RSV is highly contagious and spreads more frequently by the way the methods listed below:

Respiratory Droplets

RSV spreads through droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes and you breathe or touch.

Contaminated Surfaces

The virus can survive on toys, benchtops and door handles for several hours. Touching these and then your face can spread infection.

Close Contact

Kissing, cuddling and sharing cups with an infected person can pass the virus on, which is why babies are so easily exposed.

RSV Symptoms

RSV usually starts like a common cold. Symptoms can include::

  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Wheezing or fast breathing
  • Poor feeding or fewer wet nappies in babies

If you experience these symptoms after potential exposure to the virus, please contact your local medical centre promptly. If your baby is struggling to breathe, feeding poorly or seems very drowsy, seek urgent medical care or call 000.

Long Term Complications

Most people recover within 1 to 2 weeks. But RSV can lead to serious illness in some people. The main complications include:

  • Bronchiolitis and pneumonia: RSV is a common cause of bronchiolitis in babies, and of pneumonia in older adults. Both can lead to a hospital stay.
  • Worsening of existing conditions: RSV can trigger flare-ups of asthma, COPD and heart conditions.

RSV Vaccination Side Effects

RSV vaccines and Beyfortus are generally well tolerated. Some people may experience mild side effects, including:

  • Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site
  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches

These usually settle within a few days. Severe allergic reactions are rare. If you notice any unusual symptoms after your immunisation, contact your GP. Your GP will talk you through the benefits and risks for your situation before your immunisation.

Fees & Process

All RSV immunisations at NSMC start with a GP consultation where your doctor will check your medical history, your immunisation record and check whether you are eligible for the vaccination.

You may also be eligible for a free RSV immunisation under the National Immunisation Program or the Queensland Paediatric RSV Prevention Program. If you are not eligible, you can still choose to purchase the vaccine privately and your GP will explain the costs during your consultation. Please note that a consultation fee still applies, even when the vaccine itself is free.

The process is quick and tailored to you and your family. Schedule your consultation today by calling us on (07) 3521 4333 or booking online. For a detailed overview of all our practice fees, please visit our Fees page.
