Lung Function Testing QLD.

Spirometry is a simple and non-invasive test that measures lung function by assessing how much air you can inhale and exhale, as well as how quickly you can empty your lungs. It is commonly used to help diagnose and monitor respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other lung-related disorders.

At Narangba Station Medical Centre we offer spirometry testing to help assess lung health and provide personalised care plans based on your results. What is Spirometry?

Spirometry is a common lung function test that measures how well your lungs are working by assessing airflow in and out of your lungs. The test involves breathing into a specialised device called a spirometer, which records key measurements such as lung capacity and airflow speed. It is used to detect conditions that affect breathing, monitor disease progression and assess treatment effectiveness.

Why Might You Need a Spirometry Test?

One of our experienced team might recommend a Spirometry for several reasons, including:

  • Assessing lung function for symptoms such as persistent cough, shortness of breath, or wheezing.
  • Diagnosing or monitoring respiratory conditions like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pulmonary fibrosis.
  • Evaluating lung health before surgery.
  • Assessing the effectiveness of prescribed respiratory treatments.
  • Determining lung function for occupational health screenings.

What to Expect

A spirometry test is a quick and straightforward procedure that typically takes around 15 to 30 minutes. Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Preparation – You will be seated and a clip may be placed on your nose to ensure you breathe only through your mouth.
  2. Breathing Test – You will be asked to take a deep breath and then blow out as hard and fast as possible into a spirometer through a mouthpiece.
  3. Repeat Tests – This process is repeated several times to ensure accurate readings.
  4. Post-Test Considerations – The test is generally safe, but some people may briefly feel light-headed, dizzy or short of breath.
  5. Results Discussion – Your doctor will review the results with you and discuss any necessary follow-up steps.

Fees & Medicare Rebate

All Spirometry tests are subject to an initial consultation to assess whether the test is suitable for your needs.

During this appointment, your doctor will advise whether a Spirometry test is required and discuss any associated fees.
