Sex is a great (and important) part of our overall mental and physical health and wellbeing. Whether you have multiple partners or are in a monogamous relationship (same sex, hetero, or otherwise) you want to make sure your sex life is as good as it can be: free from infection, comfortable, and pleasurable.
Sexually Transmitted Infections
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections transmitted through sexual activity. They are passed through skin-to-skin contact, some across mucosal membranes such as mouth, rectum, vagina, and some through bodily fluids.
Depending on what kind of sex you have, and who you have sex with, there will be a variable risk of you having been exposed to a sexually transmitted infection.
Many people who have an STI do not develop any symptoms. However, here are some symptoms to be cautious of:
- Painful or burning urination, or frequent urination.
- Pain during sexual intercourse.
- Unusual or odorous vaginal discharge.
- Unusual vaginal bleeding.
- Rash, sores, or bumps on the genitals or oral or rectal areas.
- Discharge from the penis.
- Genital swelling.
A sexual health screening can check for many STIs, such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, HIV, and Hepatitis A, B and C.
For heterosexuals, regular sexual health screenings are advised depending on the number of sexual partners you have and whether you use condoms properly. For men who have sex with men, a screening is recommended every 3-12 months depending on the number of sexual partners you have.
