Vestibular Testing & Balance Assessments
Vestibular Assessment, Brisbane
Support for Dizziness, Vertigo & Balance Concerns in Brisbane
Standing upright, walking and moving with confidence are abilities most of us take for granted, but they are only made possible by a complex system that stabilises our bodies and keeps us upright. One of the key components of this system is the vestibular system, a sensory system located in the inner ear.
The vestibular system detects movement and positions the body in space to maintain balance. When the vestibular system is disrupted, a number of symptoms can occur including dizziness and vertigo, visual disturbance, nausea and an increased risk of falls.
At Narangba Station Medical Centre, our vestibular assessment in Brisbane can help to determine the cause of these symptoms and guide treatment so you can get on with your life. Whether you suffer from chronic balance problems or have had a recent episode of vertigo, we can help.

What Is the Vestibular System?
The vestibular system senses motion and spatial orientation, working together with your vision and proprioception (body awareness) to keep you balanced.
When this system is impaired, patients may experience:
- Vertigo or spinning sensations.
- Persistent dizziness.
- Unsteadiness or imbalance.
- Blurred vision when moving the head.
- Nausea or motion sensitivity.
- Increased fall risk.
Understanding how this system functions is key to accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
Common Causes of Balance Disorders
There are countless conditions that can cause imbalance. Symptoms are often shared between these various disorders which is why assessment is the first step to determining cause and developing the appropriate course of treatment.
What Is Vertigo?
Vertigo is more than just feeling light-headed. It’s that unmistakable feeling that you’re moving or the room around you is spinning when you’re not. It’s what many people describe as being pulled to one side or having lost their balance suddenly.
Vertigo can begin in the vestibular system, which is part of the inner ear and signals how the body is moving to help you remain upright and balanced. If an illness or injury affects the vestibular system such as with BPPV, vestibular neuritis or Meniere’s disease, it can send out confusing signals to the brain and make you feel like the room is tilting or spinning.
At our clinic, we are interested in the ‘why’ of vertigo so that we can best direct you to a specific vertigo treatment in Brisbane. Getting assessed as soon as you notice the symptoms allows us to hone in on the cause and help you regain balance.
Why Vestibular Testing Matters
On the surface, many different balance problems may feel similar, however the etiology can range from benign to a peripheral vestibular disorder to a neurological process. This is why a Comprehensive Vestibular Assessment is crucial.
This testing allows us to determine if the source of dizziness/vertigo is peripheral (inner ear) or central (brain) in nature, so we can rule out unnecessary imaging/scans, reduce delays, and rule out serious pathology early on. We can also more confidently direct treatment to a vestibular rehab approach, medical management, or referral to an ENT specialist or neurologist.
An accurate diagnosis can lead to faster recovery time, as well as reduce the risk of falls and persistent imbalance.
Our Vestibular Test Battery
At Narangba Station Medical Centre, our vestibular test battery is a series of specialised assessments designed to give a detailed picture of how your inner ear and brain work together to maintain balance.
Each test looks at a different aspect of your vestibular system, helping us identify the precise cause of dizziness, vertigo, or imbalance. This ensures that any treatment or rehabilitation is tailored to your specific needs.
Your assessment may include:
