What Is Breast Screening?

Breast screening is a specialised imaging process (usually a mammogram) that checks for early signs of breast cancer before they can be seen or felt.

In Queensland, women aged 40–74 are eligible for free breast screening through the BreastScreen Queensland Program, with no referral required.

Most women are encouraged to have a mammogram every two years. However, your doctor may recommend more frequent screenings depending on your age, risk factors, and family history.

What to Expect During Mammogram

If this is your first breast screening visit in Narangba our staff will explain the process to you and answer any questions you may have.

A digital mammogram involves gently compressing the breast between two plates for a few seconds while a series of X-ray images are taken. The process is quick (typically only 10–15 minutes) and most women report only mild discomfort.

Your results will be assessed by specialist radiologists. If there are any abnormalities, further imaging or follow up will be arranged to give you peace of mind.

Who Should Have Breast Screening?

Regular breast screening is recommended for:

  • Women aged 50–74 (strongly encouraged every 2 years)
  • Women aged 40–49 who wish to begin early screening
  • Anyone with a family history of breast cancer
  • Those with concerns about changes in their breasts

If you’ve noticed lumps, pain, nipple changes, or discharge, please book a consultation with one of our GPs for a breast examination and referral if needed.
