What is ADHD?

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a condition that affects brain function and behaviour.

It is typically characterised by:

  • Difficulty concentrating or staying focused
  • Impulsivity or acting without thinking
  • Hyperactivity or excessive movement

There are three main types of ADHD:

  • Predominantly inattentive – trouble with focus and attention
  • Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive – fidgeting, restlessness, impulsive behaviour
  • Combined type – a mix of inattentive and hyperactive symptoms

ADHD affects children, teenagers and adults. While some people outgrow certain symptoms, others continue to experience them into adulthood.

How is ADHD Diagnosed?

In Australia, ADHD is usually diagnosed by a specialist such as a psychiatrist, paediatrician or neurologist. The process often involves:

  • Detailed interviews with the patient and family members
  • Behavioural questionnaires or checklists
  • Medical and developmental history
  • Observation across multiple settings (e.g. home, school, work)

GPs do not provide a formal ADHD diagnosis, but they can support patients through the referral process to a specialist and offer follow-up care once a diagnosis is confirmed. If you are seeking additional ADHD support from a local GP, schedule an appointment today.

Our Role in ADHD Co-Management

At Narangba Station Medical Centre, we provide co-management support for patients who have already been diagnosed with ADHD by a qualified specialist. Co-management means working in partnership with your psychiatrist, paediatrician, or neurologist to help you maintain safe, consistent care in a local, accessible setting.

While your specialist remains responsible for your formal diagnosis and overall treatment plan, our GPs can support you with:

  • Ongoing Prescription Management – If your specialist has initiated ADHD medication, we may be able to provide repeat prescriptions under a shared care arrangement.
  • Health Monitoring – We’ll keep track of how your treatment is affecting your physical and mental wellbeing, and flag any issues that may need review.
  • Medication Side Effect Reviews – Experiencing unwanted effects? We can assess symptoms and liaise with your specialist to make adjustments where needed.
  • Referrals to Allied Health – Including psychologists, dietitians, or sleep specialists for comprehensive, wrap-around support.
  • Routine GP Care – Your general health matters too. We support the whole person, not just the diagnosis.

Already Diagnosed with ADHD? We Can Help Co-Manage Your Care

We understand the importance of continuity in ADHD care. By working alongside your treating specialist, our GPs can help streamline your experience, reduce gaps between reviews, and ensure you stay supported in everyday life.

Treatment Options for ADHD

ADHD treatment varies from person to person. A comprehensive treatment plan may include a number of specialists and could include the following:

Behavioural Therapy

Including support with routines, time management and coping strategies.

Lifestyle Adjustments

Such as regular exercise, structured routines and nutritional support.

Medication

Such as stimulant or non-stimulant medications prescribed by a specialist.

Psychological Support

To address co-existing conditions like anxiety, depression or low self-esteem.

Ongoing support and regular check-ins are often an important part of managing ADHD effectively over time.
