What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy uses physical techniques and evidence-based approaches to treat and manage a variety of musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiovascular conditions. By focusing on improving movement, relieving pain, and promoting physical well-being, physiotherapy aims to restore optimal function and prevent injuries.

Physiotherapy can benefit individuals of all ages, from children to older adults, and is often used as part of a rehabilitation plan after surgery, injury, or illness. It can also be used as a preventive measure to maintain health and fitness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you still have questions about physiotherapy at Narangba Station Medical Centre? No problem! Here are the most commonly asked questions we receive about physiotherapy services in Brisbane.

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that uses physical techniques to help restore movement, manage pain, and improve overall physical function. It can benefit people of all ages dealing with injuries, chronic conditions, post-surgery recovery, and more.

Physiotherapy can help with a wide range of conditions, including musculoskeletal issues (e.g., back and neck pain), sports injuries, arthritis, neurological conditions (e.g., stroke, Parkinson’s disease), respiratory conditions (e.g., asthma, COPD), and post-surgical rehabilitation.

In most cases, you do not need a referral to see a physiotherapist. However, your GP may refer you to a physiotherapist as part of a wider health care plan.

Your first session will involve a thorough assessment, where the physiotherapist will discuss your medical history, symptoms, and lifestyle. They will perform physical tests to assess your movement and pain levels, and then develop a personalised treatment plan tailored to your needs.

The length of treatment varies depending on the condition being treated, the severity of the problem, and individual progress. Our physiotherapist will provide guidance on how many sessions may be needed and set clear goals for your treatment plan.

Physiotherapy is generally not painful, but some treatments or exercises may cause temporary discomfort as your body adjusts. Our physiotherapist will always aim to make treatments as comfortable as possible while still being effective.

Yes, physiotherapy is highly effective in managing chronic pain conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, and chronic back pain. Through a combination of exercise, manual therapy, and education, our physiotherapist can help alleviate pain and improve function.

Dry needling is a technique used by physiotherapists to target trigger points in muscles, reducing pain and tension. While it uses needles like acupuncture, dry needling focuses specifically on musculoskeletal issues rather than traditional Chinese medicine principles.

Our physiotherapist can help athletes recover from injuries by providing targeted treatments that reduce pain, restore movement, and strengthen affected areas. They’ll also focus on preventing future injuries by improving posture, technique, and flexibility.

Physiotherapy plays a key role in rehabilitation after surgery. It helps restore movement, reduce swelling, strengthen muscles, and improve overall function, ensuring a quicker and safer recovery process.
