Protect your family from Meningitis

Meningitis from Meningococcal Disease can affect people of all ages, though infants, young adults, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent meningococcal meningitis and its potentially life-altering effects. Protect your family by booking a consultation with our experienced team today.

Where is Meningitis a concern?

Meningitis as a result of Meningococcal Disease is a global health issue, with some regions experiencing higher rates due to limited access to vaccines or healthcare. Countries in the "meningitis belt" of sub-Saharan Africa are at particularly high risk, as are certain parts of Asia and the Middle East.

If you’re travelling to areas where meningitis is prevalent, it’s essential to:

  • Confirm your vaccination status before departure.
  • Practise good hygiene, including frequent handwashing.
  • Avoid crowded areas where infections spread easily.

Our GPs at Narangba Station Medical Centre are here to offer advice and vaccinations to keep you and your family safe based on your needs and travel plans. Call us on (07) 3521 4333 or book a consultation online today.

How is Meningitis spread?

Vaccination is the most effective measure to prevent meningitis and its rapid spread. Meningitis spreads through close contact with an infected person, often via:

Respiratory Droplets

Coughing, sneezing, talking or sharing utensils. These can cause respiratory droplets.

Close Quarters

Environments like dormitories or childcare centres increase transmission risks.

Direct Contact

Touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your mouth or nose can cause meningitis to spread.

Meningitis Symptoms

Meningitis symptoms can develop suddenly and should never be ignored. Common signs include:

  • High fever
  • Severe headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Confusion or difficulty concentrating

If you or someone you know exhibits these symptoms, especially after exposure to a high-risk environment, seek medical attention immediately.

 Long Term Complications

Meningococcal disease can have devastating long-term effects, even with treatment. The complications highlighted below amplify the importance of vaccination to prevent meningitis altogether.

Some of the most common potential complications include:

  • Hearing loss: Damage to the auditory nerves can cause permanent hearing impairment.

  • Neurological damage: Memory problems, difficulty concentrating, or seizures may occur.

  • Limb loss: Severe cases may lead to amputations due to tissue damage.

Meningococcal Vaccination Side Effects

There are two types of meningococcal vaccines available, Meningococcal ACWY and Meningococcal B vaccines. Both vaccines are safe and well-tolerated by most people. Common side effects may include:

  • Redness or swelling at the injection site
  • Low-grade fever
  • Fatigue
  • Mild muscle or joint pain

Severe reactions are rare but may include allergic responses. If you experience any unusual symptoms, consult a healthcare professional promptly.

Fees & Process

While both the Meningococcal ACWY and Meningococcal B vaccinations are included in the National Immunisation Program for many individuals in Queensland (check your eligibility here), all consultations at Narangba Station Medical Centre are privately billed. Before receiving any vaccination, it’s essential to have a consultation to confirm your eligibility and assess any potential health risks. During this appointment, your doctor will review your medical history, discuss the vaccination schedule, outline any associated fees, and ensure the vaccine is suitable for you.

Once you have had your initial consultation and your vaccination schedule has been set, generally speaking, you will not require to see the doctor again and can book directly with our nurses or reception team at NSMC. Please note that for vaccinations, our telephone booking service is simpler than online bookings.

Our streamlined process ensures that protecting your health is simple and convenient. Book your consultation today by calling (07) 3521 4333 or booking online.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you still have questions about preventative care and vaccinations available for Meningococcal Disease? No problem! Here are the most commonly asked questions our GPs receive about Meningococcal Vaccinations in Brisbane.

For Meningococcal ACWY, it is recommended to receive the vaccine at least 6–8 weeks before travel, especially if you are visiting high-risk areas. Some destinations require proof of vaccination.

For Meningococcal B, timing depends on your vaccination history and risk factors. Our doctors can help determine if this vaccine is necessary for your trip.

Yes, but coverage depends on the vaccine type and eligibility:

  • Meningococcal ACWY – Funded under the NIP for all children at 12 months and adolescents aged 14–16 years. Some travellers and high-risk individuals may also need it.
  • Meningococcal B – Funded under the NIP for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children (under 2 years) and people with certain medical conditions. Some states, like Queensland and South Australia, offer additional free MenB vaccines for infants, adolescents, and young adults.

If you're not eligible for a funded vaccine, both MenACWY and MenB are available privately. Our team can help determine if you need vaccination.

Yes. Meningococcal bacteria spread through close contact, such as coughing, sneezing, kissing, or sharing drinks. Crowded environments increase transmission risks.

Vaccination significantly reduces the likelihood of contracting and spreading the disease.

Meningococcal ACWY – protection lasts around five years; a booster may be needed for continued risk.

Meningococcal B – requires a two-dose schedule in most cases, with additional boosters for high-risk individuals.

Our doctors will assess your vaccination history and provide guidance on boosters if necessary.

Yes, you may require a booster dose if several years have passed.

Travellers, students in shared housing, and those with high-risk health conditions may need an updated dose.

We can review your immunity status and travel plans to determine if additional vaccination is necessary.

The Meningococcal B vaccine is recommended for:

  • Infants under 2 years old (higher risk of severe disease).
  • Adolescents aged 15–19 (especially those in dormitories).
  • People with certain medical conditions (e.g., immune disorders).

If you’re considering Meningococcal B vaccination, speak to our doctors about your options.

The best prevention includes:

  • Vaccination – protects against the most common bacterial strains.
  • Good hygiene – regular handwashing, avoiding shared drinks/utensils.
  • Reducing exposure risks – limiting contact in high-risk environments.

At Narangba Station Medical Centre, we offer both Meningococcal ACWY and Meningococcal B vaccines to help keep you and your family safe.
