What Is Preconception Care for Men?
Preconception care means taking care of your health before you start trying for a pregnancy. Men's preconception care can include reviewing their general health, reproductive health, lifestyle and any medical conditions that may affect their fertility or family planning.
A male preconception check-up means having a chance to speak with your GP about your health and pinpointing areas for improvement prior to starting a family.
Depending on your individual circumstances, your GP may discuss:
- General health and medical history
- Current medications and supplements
- Previous reproductive or fertility concerns
- Lifestyle factors that may affect fertility
- Sexual health and STI screening
- Diet, exercise and sleep
- Alcohol, smoking and recreational drug use
- Stress and overall wellbeing
- Whether fertility testing may be appropriate
The aim isn't to guarantee fertility or predict whether conception will occur. Instead, preconception care gives you an opportunity to understand your health and make informed decisions before starting a family.
Who Can Benefit From Male Preconception Care?
You don’t need to be experiencing fertility problems to book a preconception health screening for men.
A preconception GP appointment may be useful if you:
- Are planning to start a family soon
- Are thinking about having children in the future
- Want to understand more about your fertility health
- Have concerns about sperm health
- Have previously experienced fertility difficulties
- Take medications that may affect reproductive health
- Have an existing health condition you want to discuss before conception
- Want personalised advice about lifestyle factors and fertility
Some men simply want a proactive health check before trying to conceive. Others may have specific concerns about fertility or their general health. Whatever brings you in, our GPs can help you understand what steps may be appropriate for your circumstances.
What Does a Men's Fertility Health Check Involve?
There’s no single test that can diagnose male fertility. Your GP will take your individual circumstances into account and advise if further investigation or testing is necessary.
A fertility health check for men could involve discussing your medical and reproductive history, medication you’re taking, lifestyle factors and any symptoms or worries you have.
Your GP may also discuss:
General Health Assessment
Your general health can affect your reproductive system. Your GP might take into account current medical issues, medications you take, your family history and other aspects of your health that could play a role in conception.
Sexual and Reproductive Health
If you have concerns around libido, erectile issues, past reproductive concerns or any other matters around sexual health, you can talk to your GP about these in a confidential space.
Lifestyle Assessment
Your GP can offer tailored advice on how lifestyle impacts male fertility. Topics you can talk to your GP about include sleep, activity levels, diet, smoking, alcohol and weight management.
Fertility Testing
If your medical history or situation suggests it, your GP will talk you through any useful investigations. This may include semen analysis or other tests based on your needs.
Male Fertility Testing in Narangba
One of these tests may be a semen analysis. A semen analysis looks at aspects of semen and sperm health, including the number of sperm (sperm concentration), movement (motility) and shape (morphology).
Your GP can discuss fertility testing with you if it's appropriate, and make arrangements for any necessary testing or referral.
Remember, you don't necessarily need to have fertility tests. Many men won't need tests before they decide to try for a child. Your GP can help you decide if fertility testing is something you need, based on your overall health and medical history, and your family planning plans.
Lifestyle Factors That Can Affect Male Fertility
There are lots of everyday things that can impact on your fertility. Your GP can talk you through what practical changes might be beneficial for you before you conceive.
Nutrition
Eating a healthy, balanced diet can give your body all the nutrients that it needs for general health, including reproductive health. Your GP can talk to you about your diet and whether making any changes or seeing a nutritionist may benefit you.
Sleep and Stress
Not getting enough sleep and chronic stress can impact your overall health and can also impact your hormones and reproductive system. Addressing your sleep hygiene and managing stress in a way that works for you can be important steps to take before conceiving.
Exercise and Healthy Weight
Keeping active and a healthy weight can help your general health. Your GP can advise you about how much exercise is right for you and your circumstances.
Smoking and Alcohol
Smoking and drinking regularly can impact on your general health and your reproductive system. Your GP can offer you advice and support if you would like to cut down or quit smoking or drinking alcohol.
Medications and Supplements
There are some medications and supplements that you should be aware of before you try to conceive. Make sure you tell your GP about any medications and supplements you are taking, so they can advise if any changes are needed.
Preconception Advice for Men
There's no magic checklist for healthy conception. Preconception advice should be individual to you and your circumstances including your family planning goals. Your GP can discuss with you what lifestyle factors might be relevant to you and whether there are any health issues you should tackle before trying for a baby.
This could include improving your sleep, reviewing medications, addressing smoking or alcohol use, better managing existing medical conditions, improving your nutrition or discussing fertility testing where needed.
None of this will guarantee that you'll become pregnant, but it will help you approach it with more information on your health and any areas that could do with a bit of work.
When to Talk to a GP About Fertility
You don't need to wait until you have symptoms to book an appointment for preconception advice. If you know you have fertility problems or have experienced reproductive issues in the past, it's especially important you talk to your GP.
Equally, if you have an existing medical condition or have questions about any medication you take and how this could impact on your chances of conceiving seeing your GP is a good place to start.
You and your partner can also see your GP if you have been trying to conceive for some time with no success. They will be able to talk you through your individual circumstances and discuss whether investigations into fertility or referral to a specialist may be advised.
Getting advice sooner rather than later means you can understand all your options rather than sitting around guessing what may or may not be the issue.
