Minimise the risks of Typhoid Fever while travelling

While typhoid fever is not common in Australia, it poses a significant risk for travellers to countries with inadequate sanitation, including parts of Asia, Africa, and South America. Taking proactive steps, like getting vaccinated, can help minimise your risk. Speak with our GPs to create a personalised vaccination plan that fits your travel needs.

Where is Typhoid found?

Typhoid fever is prevalent in regions where access to clean water and proper sanitation is limited. Countries in Southeast Asia, Latin America, Pacific Islands, the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa are considered high-risk areas for typhoid outbreaks. Travellers to these regions should take preventive measures, including vaccination, to protect their health.

When visiting high-risk areas, consider these precautions:

  • Ensure you’re vaccinated against typhoid.
  • Drink only bottled or treated water.
  • Avoid raw or undercooked food, particularly street food.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.

At Narangba Station Medical Centre, we provide comprehensive travel health advice to keep you safe. Book a consultation with one of our doctors to prepare for your next journey.

How is Typhoid spread?

Typhoid fever is caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi and spreads through:

Contaminated Water/Food

The most common mode of transmission, often in areas with poor sanitation.

Direct Contact

Close contact with someone infected with typhoid can increase your risk of catching Typhoid Fever.

Poor Hygiene Practices

Touching contaminated surfaces or consuming unsafe water or food can lead to infection.

Typhoid Symptoms

Symptoms of typhoid fever typically develop 8-14 days after exposure to the bacteria and may include:

  • High fever
  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Constipation or diarrhoea
  • Rash or rose-coloured spots
  • Cough

In severe cases, typhoid fever can lead to life-threatening complications, including intestinal perforation. Early vaccination and prompt treatment are essential to reducing these risks.

Long-Term Complications

If left untreated, typhoid fever can result in serious health issues, such as:

  • Intestinal Perforation: A potentially life-threatening complication requiring immediate medical attention.
  • Severe Dehydration: Prolonged diarrhoea can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
  • Chronic Carriage: Some individuals may continue to carry the bacteria and spread it to others, even after symptoms resolve.

Vaccination is a critical step to preventing these complications and protecting your long-term health.

Typhoid Vaccination Side Effects

The typhoid vaccine is safe for most people and provides reliable protection against infection. As with any vaccine, mild side effects may occur, including:

  • Soreness or redness at the injection site
  • Low-grade fever or fatigue
  • Headache or mild gastrointestinal discomfort

Serious side effects are extremely rare. If you experience any unusual symptoms after vaccination, contact your doctor for advice.

Fees & Process

The typhoid vaccine is privately billed, with costs explained clearly during your initial consultation. To ensure it’s suitable for you, an initial appointment is essential before receiving the vaccine. At this consultation, your doctor will review your medical history, discuss your travel plans, and assess your risk of exposure to typhoid. Based on this, they’ll recommend the best vaccination schedule for your needs.

The process is straightforward. It includes a detailed consultation to evaluate your circumstances, the administration of the vaccine, and practical tips to help reduce your risk of typhoid infection—especially if you’re travelling to regions where the disease is more prevalent, such as parts of Asia, Africa, or South America.

Our goal is to make the vaccination process easy and worry-free so you can focus on planning your trip. Call us today at (07) 3521 4333 or book online to schedule your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you still have questions about preventative care and vaccinations available for Typhoid Fever? No problem! Here are the most commonly asked questions our GPs receive about Typhoid Vaccinations in Brisbane.

The typhoid vaccine is recommended for travellers visiting regions with a high risk of typhoid fever, particularly in parts of Asia, Africa, and Central or South America. It is also advised for individuals working in environments where exposure to Salmonella Typhi is possible, such as laboratories or health settings. If you are staying with locals in high-risk areas or have an extended trip planned, vaccination is strongly encouraged to reduce your risk.

The vaccine typically provides protection for up to three years. If you continue to travel to or live in areas where typhoid fever is common, a booster dose may be required to maintain immunity. Your doctor can advise you when a booster is necessary based on your travel history and future plans.

Yes, the typhoid vaccine is safe for children aged two years and older. It is an important measure for families travelling to high-risk areas, as children are particularly vulnerable to typhoid fever. Your doctor will ensure the vaccine schedule is appropriate for your child’s age and health needs.

While the typhoid vaccine offers strong protection, no vaccine guarantees 100% immunity. To further minimise your risk, it’s crucial to practise safe food and water precautions, such as drinking bottled or boiled water, avoiding raw or undercooked foods, and steering clear of street food in high-risk areas. Vaccination combined with these measures offers the best defence against typhoid.

The risk of typhoid fever is generally lower in urban areas with modern sanitation systems. However, if your travel plans include rural or remote regions, or if you are unsure about the sanitation in the city you’re visiting, it’s wise to discuss your travel plans with a doctor. They can help determine if the vaccine is necessary based on your itinerary.

Typhoid fever is rare in Australia due to excellent sanitation and water systems. However, cases do occur, primarily among individuals returning from travel to high-risk countries or through contact with someone who is infected. If you’ve recently travelled and are experiencing symptoms such as fever, weakness, or abdominal pain, seek medical advice promptly. Vaccination can help protect against this risk when travelling abroad.
