Finding out you're pregnant isn't always simple, and deciding what to do next is a personal choice. At Narangba Station Medical Centre, Dr Alexander Browne provides early medical termination of pregnancy for adults up to 9 weeks (63 days) gestation, in a confidential and non-judgemental setting.
Medical termination, also known as a medical abortion, the abortion pill or MS-2 Step, uses medication rather than surgery to end an early pregnancy. It is a safe and legal option for eligible patients when appropriately prescribed and managed. In Queensland, early medical abortion up to 9 weeks can be provided under the care of an authorised healthcare practitioner, including a GP. If you're considering your unplanned pregnancy options, you can arrange a confidential consultation with Dr Browne.

How It Works
Early medical termination involves a series of appointments and checks to make sure the process is appropriate for you, that you understand what to expect, and that you have the right follow-up in place. Dr Alexander Browne will guide you through each stage, from your first confidential consultation and required tests through to treatment and follow-up care.
1: Initial Consultation
Your first appointment is a private consultation to discuss your pregnancy, your options and whether early medical termination may be suitable for you. He will explain how the process works, what to expect, possible side effects and risks, and answer any questions you may have.
2: Ultrasound & Blood Tests
You will be referred to a diagnostic imaging or radiology clinic for an ultrasound an dating scan to confirm the location of the pregnancy and how far along you are. Any required blood tests can be completed on-site at Narangba Station Medical Centre to support your assessment before treatment.
3: Second Consultation & Medication
At your second consultation, Dr Browne will review your ultrasound and test results, confirm your suitability for medical termination and discuss the process again with you. If you choose to proceed, your consent will be completed and the medication will be provided with clear instructions.
4: Follow Up Care
A follow-up appointment is arranged after treatment to check how you are recovering and confirm that the termination is complete. Dr Browne will review any symptoms or concerns, discuss whether any further assessment is needed and provide additional support or care where required.
What to expect after taking the medication?
After taking the second medication, cramping and vaginal bleeding are expected as the pregnancy passes. Bleeding is generally heavier than your usual period at first and may include blood clots. Cramping can also be stronger than normal period pain. Both should gradually reduce as the process progresses, although lighter bleeding or spotting may continue afterward. Temporary side effects can also include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Hot flushes
- Mild temperature.
Dr Browne will explain what to expect during your initial or second consultation and provide clear instructions about pain relief, what symptoms are expected and when you should contact the practice or seek urgent medical care.
When to seek medical help?
Serious complications following termination of pregnancy are uncommon when care is provided appropriately, but it is important to know when to ask for help. Dr Browne will provide you with specific aftercare instructions and you should contact the clinic or seek medical advice if you are concerned about symptoms such as:
- Bleeding that seems unusually or excessively heavy
- Severe or worsening pain that is not adequately controlled with recommended pain relief
- Persistent fever or feeling significantly unwell
- Dizziness, fainting or weakness associated with bleeding
- Ongoing pregnancy symptoms
- No bleeding after taking the second medication when bleeding was expected
- Any other symptom that concerns you.
For a medical emergency, call Triple Zero (000) or attend your nearest hospital emergency department.
