Electrocardiogram (ECG)
Electrocardiogram (ECG) Brisbane
An electrocardiogram – commonly known as an ECG – is a simple and non-invasive test that checks the electrical activity of your heart. It’s a valuable tool in helping doctors identify issues related to heart rhythm, blood flow and overall cardiac function. ECGs are quick, painless and can offer important insights into your heart health.
Whether you're experiencing symptoms like chest pain or palpitations, or you're undergoing a general health check, an ECG could be a useful step in understanding how well your heart is functioning. At Narangba Station Medical Centre, we offer in-clinic ECGs as part of our ongoing commitment to comprehensive, quality care.

What is an ECG?
An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a test that records the electrical signals in your heart. Every time your heart beats, it sends out an electrical impulse.Â
An ECG captures these impulses and displays them as waves on a graph. By reviewing these wave patterns, your doctor can identify irregularities such as abnormal heart rhythms, reduced blood flow or signs of a previous heart attack.
The test is safe, painless, and only takes a few minutes to complete.
Why Might You Need an ECG?
Your doctor may recommend an ECG if you are experiencing symptoms such as:
- Chest pain or tightness
- Irregular heartbeat or palpitations
- Dizziness, light-headedness or fainting
- Shortness of breath
- Unexplained fatigue
You might also need an ECG as part of a routine heart health check, before surgery or as part of ongoing monitoring for existing heart conditions.

What To Expect?
An ECG appointment at Narangba Station Medical Centre usually takes around 15 to 30 minutes from start to finish. ECGs are considered very safe. There are no major risks, though occasionally you might feel a bit light-headed or short of breath briefly during or after the test. Let your doctor know if you feel unwell at any stage. Here's what to expect:
1. Consultation
Your doctor will assess your symptoms and determine if an ECG is needed.
2. Preparation
You'll be asked to lie down while small sticky electrodes are placed on your chest, arms and legs.
3. ECG Recording
The machine will record your heart’s electrical activity. This part only takes a few minutes.
4. Review
Your GP will discuss the results with you and any next steps required.

If your ECG is requested by your GP as part of a medical consultation or for clinical reasons, it may be eligible for a Medicare rebate. Out-of-pocket costs may apply depending on the nature of the consultation and your individual Medicare entitlements. How to Prepare
There’s usually no special preparation required for an ECG. However, here are a few tips to help your appointment run smoothly:
- Wear a loose-fitting top to make it easier to access your chest area.
- Avoid applying lotions or oils to your skin beforehand, as this can affect the electrodes.
- Let your doctor know about any medications you're currently taking.
You’ll be able to return to your normal activities immediately after the test.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you still have questions about Electrocardiograms (ECGs)? No problem! Here are the most commonly asked questions our GPs receive about safe administration of Electrocardiogram (ECG) Checks in Brisbane.
No – an electrocardiogram (ECG) is completely painless. The test involves placing small, sticky electrodes on your chest, arms, and legs. These are connected to a machine that records the electrical signals of your heart. The most you might feel is a cool sensation from the gel pads or a slight chill from having your skin exposed. There are no needles, shocks or discomfort.
In most cases, the ECG results are available immediately. Your GP or technician will analyse the recording during your consultation and discuss the findings with you then and there. If anything unusual is detected, your doctor may recommend further testing or refer you to a cardiologist for a more in-depth assessment.
Yes, you can return to your normal routine straight away – including driving. The test itself is non-invasive and has no after-effects. However, if your ECG reveals any abnormalities or if you’re feeling unwell due to your symptoms, your doctor may recommend temporary restrictions or further assessment before you get behind the wheel.
No referral is needed. If your GP at Narangba Station Medical Centre determines that an ECG is necessary during your appointment, whether due to symptoms like chest pain, palpitations, dizziness or as part of a routine check-up, they can usually perform one on the spot in the clinic.
An ECG cannot detect all heart problems but it can detect many of them. An ECG is an excellent starting point and can identify a range of issues such as irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias), signs of a past or current heart attack, and other electrical abnormalities. However, it doesn’t always pick up conditions that occur intermittently or those involving structural issues with the heart. If needed, your doctor may recommend additional tests like an echocardiogram, stress test, or a Holter monitor to get a more complete picture.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here. Most people don’t need regular ECGs unless they’re showing symptoms (like chest pain, shortness of breath, or palpitations), have a personal or family history of heart disease, or are undergoing treatment for a known heart condition. Your GP will advise on the frequency based on your health status, risk factors, and medical history.
