Take a simple step towards Mumps prevention

While mumps is rare in Australia, outbreaks can occur, particularly in communities with lower vaccination rates. Protect your family by booking a consultation with our experienced doctors today and schedule your measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations.

Where are Mumps still found?

Mumps is a global health concern and can be found in many parts of the world. Regions with lower vaccination rates, including certain parts of Africa, Asia, and Europe, may experience outbreaks. It spreads easily in crowded environments such as schools, workplaces, and community events.

Before travelling or in case of local outbreaks, consider:

  • Ensuring you’re up to date with your vaccinations.
  • Practising good hygiene by washing your hands regularly.
  • Avoiding close contact with individuals displaying symptoms.

Our GPs at Narangba Station Medical Centre are here to offer advice and vaccinations to keep you and your family safe based on your needs and travel plans. Call us on (07) 3521 4333 or book a consultation online today.

How is Mumps spread?

There are a variety of reasons why mumps can spread through the community and vaccination is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of infection and protect those around you. The 3 most common ways how mumps can spread include:

Respiratory Droplets

Coughing, sneezing, or talking which causes respiratory droplets.

Direct Contact

Sharing utensils, drinks, or personal items with an infected person.

Surfaces

Touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your mouth or nose.

Mumps Symptoms

Mumps is caused by the mumps virus and can lead to symptoms in some patients such as:

  • Swollen salivary glands (commonly in the cheeks)
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches

In some cases, mumps may result in complications like meningitis or hearing loss, particularly in unvaccinated individuals. Early vaccination can play a vital role in prevention.

 Long Term Complications

Although mumps is often mild, it may lead to complications in some patients such as the following:

  • Orchitis: Painful swelling of the testicles in males.
  • Oophoritis or Mastitis: Inflammation of the ovaries or breasts in females.
  • Hearing Loss: Rarely, mumps may cause permanent hearing damage.
  • Encephalitis or Meningitis: Inflammation of the brain or membranes surrounding the brain.

Vaccination reduces the risk of these complications.

Mumps Vaccination Side Effects

Like most vaccines, the mumps vaccine is generally well-tolerated. However, as with any medical intervention, some individuals may experience mild side effects. These side effects are usually temporary and resolve on their own within a few days. Common side effects may include:

  • Redness or Swelling at the Injection Site: Some people may experience mild discomfort where the vaccine was administered.
  • Low-Grade Fever: A slight increase in body temperature is a common response as the immune system works to build protection.
  • Fatigue or Mild Muscle Aches: Temporary tiredness or mild muscle discomfort can occur in some individuals.
  • Mild Rash: A small number of people may develop a mild rash after receiving the vaccine.

Serious side effects are extremely rare. If you experience any unusual symptoms or have concerns following your vaccination, it’s important to consult your doctor for advice. Our GPs at Narangba Station Medical Centre are here to answer any questions and ensure your vaccination experience is safe and reassuring. Book a consultation today to discuss your vaccination needs.

Fees & Process

While the mumps vaccination is included in the National Immunisation Program for many individuals in Queensland (check your eligibility here), all consultations at Narangba Station Medical Centre are privately billed. Before receiving any vaccination, it’s essential to have a consultation to confirm your eligibility and assess any potential health risks. During this appointment, your doctor will review your medical history, discuss the vaccination schedule, outline any associated fees, and ensure the vaccine is suitable for you.

Once you have had your initial consultation and your vaccination schedule has been set, generally speaking, you will not require to see the doctor again and can book directly with our nurses or reception team at NSMC. Please note that for vaccinations, our telephone booking service is simpler than online bookings. Our streamlined process ensures that protecting your health is simple and convenient. Book your consultation today by calling 07) 3521 4333 or booking online.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you still have questions about preventative care and vaccinations available for Mumps? No problem! Here are the most commonly asked questions our GPs receive about Mumps Vaccinations in Brisbane.

The mumps vaccine works by introducing a weakened form of the mumps virus into your body, which stimulates your immune system to produce antibodies. These antibodies recognise and fight the mumps virus if you are exposed in the future. It is commonly administered as part of the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine, which offers protection against three highly contagious diseases.

Yes, the mumps vaccine is both safe and effective for children. It has undergone extensive testing to ensure its safety and is routinely administered as part of the childhood immunisation schedule. Side effects are typically mild and may include a low-grade fever or soreness at the injection site.

Absolutely. Adults who were not vaccinated as children or those in high-risk groups, such as healthcare workers or individuals travelling to areas with mumps outbreaks, may benefit from the mumps vaccine. If you’re unsure about your vaccination status, our GPs can assess your needs and recommend an appropriate course of action.

The MMR vaccine typically provides long-lasting immunity against mumps. However, immunity may wane over time in some individuals. In certain cases, such as during a mumps outbreak or for individuals in high-risk settings, a booster dose may be recommended to maintain protection.

If you think you’ve been exposed to mumps, it’s important to act quickly. Contact your doctor immediately for guidance. They may recommend post-exposure prophylaxis, including vaccination if you are not already immune. Additionally, isolation may be advised to prevent spreading the virus to others, especially those who are unvaccinated or vulnerable.

Mumps vaccination is crucial not only for individual protection but also for safeguarding community health. By reducing the spread of the virus, vaccination helps prevent outbreaks and protects those who cannot be vaccinated, such as individuals with certain medical conditions. This is particularly important in achieving herd immunity, which benefits everyone.
