What is an Indigenous Health Check?

The Indigenous Health Check, also known as the 715 Health Check, is an annual comprehensive health assessment available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of all ages. It focuses on early detection, prevention, and management of common health conditions. This ensures holistic care that addresses both physical and mental well-being. This health check may help identify risks for chronic diseases, assess lifestyle factors, and connect individuals with ongoing care and support services as needed.

Why is an Annual Indigenous Health Check important?

Regular health checks are crucial in addressing the health gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians are at a higher risk of chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory issues. The annual Indigenous Health Check plays a vital role in the early identification and management of these risks. It also ensures our First Nations patients receive timely interventions that may prevent or mitigate long-term health complications.

Who should get an Indigenous Health Check?

The Indigenous Health Check is recommended for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, regardless of age. Whether you are a child, adolescent, adult, or elder, this health check helps ensure that your health is regularly monitored, and any potential concerns are addressed early.

Fees and Medicare Rebate

The Indigenous Health Check (715 Health Check) is fully covered by Medicare, meaning there are no out-of-pocket expenses for eligible patients. This allows everyone in the Indigenous community to access this vital healthcare service without financial burden. At Narangba Station Medical Centre, we offer bulk billing for this service.

Please Note: This is a general health assessment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People and does not qualify as a drivers medical. What To Expect?

An Indigenous Health Check typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes. Our approach is patient-centred and respectful of your cultural values and preferences. We encourage you to bring a support person if you feel more comfortable. During your Health Check, one of our dedicated GPs will typically go through the following:

Physical Health

This includes an overall assessment of your physical health, including checking vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and weight.

Medical Tests

If needed, your doctor will order any necessary tests to assess your risk for chronic diseases. This may include, for example, bloody tests.

Medical History Review

We’ll go over your complete medical history, including any chronic conditions, surgeries, allergies, and past illnesses. As well as any relevant family medical history. We’ll also review any current medications to ensure they are still appropriate and effective for your needs.

Lifestyle Factors

Together we'll discuss and assess your lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and smoking habits. This will help to give a thorough and holistic insight into your overall health.

Mental Health

As part of your health assessment, your doctor will discuss mental health and emotional well-being, offering support if needed.

Care Plan Development

After completing the assessments, your doctor will work with you to develop a personalised care plan. This plan may include referrals to specialists, recommendations for lifestyle adjustments, and follow-up appointments to monitor your health over time.
