What is Implanon?

Developed in 1998 and introduced to Australia in 2001, Implanon NXT is a small, flexible contraceptive implant inserted under the skin of your upper arm. This birth control implant releases a hormone called etonogestrel, which prevents pregnancy by stopping ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and thinning the uterine lining.

While it is important to remember that no contraceptive is 100% guaranteed, through decades of testing, Implanon is a 99% effective longer-term birth control method, which lasts for up to three years before requiring replacement or removal.

How Does Implanon Work?

Implanon works by steadily releasing a low dose of the hormone progestogen (etonogestrel) into your bloodstream. This hormone primarily prevents ovulation, stopping the release of eggs from your ovaries. Additionally, it thickens cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach any released eggs, and thins the uterine lining, reducing the chances of implantation.

Progestogen is one of the hormones used in the combined oral contraceptive pill (the pill) and is similar to the natural hormone progesterone which is made by the body.

Implanon Side Effects

While the side effects of Implanon implantation are rare, some women may experience side effects such as:

  • Irregular bleeding
  • Mood changes
  • Weight gain
  • Headaches
  • Acne

Typically, most of the side effects improve over time as your body adjusts to the hormone. However, if the side effects persist, our doctors are available to help manage them and discuss alternative birth control options such as intrauterine devices (IUDs) and oral contraceptives.

How to Prepare?

Before your Implanon insertion, it’s important to honestly discuss your medical history and any current medications with your doctor to ensure that this contraceptive implant is a safe option for you. On the day of your appointment, please wear loose clothing that allows easy access to your upper arm as this is where the implant will be gently inserted. Our team will provide you with all necessary pre-treatment instructions during your consultation.

You do not need to have an empty stomach for this procedure and we encourage you to eat your regular meals before the appointment. Please also take all of your medications as you normally would and avoid unprotected sex for at least three weeks before your appointment.

The procedure time, including preparation, for Implanon Implants is typically around 15-20 minutes and we kindly ask for all patients to arrive 10 minutes early for their appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you still have questions about Implanon Insertion? No problem! Here are the most commonly asked questions our GPs receive about Implanon Insertion in Brisbane.

Implanon implants are effective as a contraceptive for up to three years. During this period, the implant continuously releases a low dose of the hormone etonogestrel to assist with preventing pregnancy. After three years, the hormone levels decrease, making it less effective.

At this stage, the implant should be removed or replaced to ensure continued contraceptive protection. The removal and replacement procedures are straightforward and can be done during the same appointment if desired.

Irregular bleeding is a common side effect of Implanon, especially in the first few months. To manage this, your doctor may prescribe medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or hormonal treatments like the combined oral contraceptive pill to regulate bleeding. In some cases, the bleeding improves over time without additional treatment.

If bleeding remains heavy or bothersome, discussing alternative contraceptive options with your doctor is advisable.

Implanon contains the active ingredient etonogestrel, a synthetic form of the naturally occurring hormone progesterone. The implant is a small, flexible plastic rod, which is inserted under the skin of the upper arm. The hormone is released steadily over time, providing continuous contraception. Etonogestrel works primarily by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and thinning the uterine lining.

Some users of Implanon report weight gain, although studies have shown that this is not a universal side effect. Weight changes can result from a variety of factors, including lifestyle changes, diet, and individual reactions to the hormone.

If you are concerned about weight gain while using Implanon, it's important to discuss this with your doctor, who can help you understand the potential causes and provide guidance on managing your weight.

Implanon is more than 99% effective in preventing pregnancy, making it one of the most reliable forms of contraception available. However, no contraceptive method is completely foolproof.

The chance of becoming pregnant with Implanon is extremely low, but if you experience symptoms of pregnancy, such as a missed period or nausea, it's important to take a pregnancy test and consult your doctor.

Implanon begins to work immediately if it is inserted within the first five days of your menstrual cycle. If it is inserted at any other time in your cycle, it may take up to seven days to become effective. During this time, you should use an additional method of contraception, such as condoms, to ensure you are fully protected against pregnancy.

Implanon does not cause infertility. Once the implant is removed, your fertility should return to normal relatively quickly, usually within a few weeks. Many women are able to conceive shortly after removal, and there is no evidence to suggest that long-term use of Implanon has any negative impact on fertility.
