Protect your family from Rabies

Rabies remains a serious health risk in many regions around the world, especially in areas where the disease is still prevalent among animals. Travelling to these destinations without proper vaccination puts you and your loved ones at risk. Take a proactive approach to safeguard your family’s health by booking a consultation with our general practitioners today.

Where is Rabies most common?

Rabies, although possible to contract anywhere in the world, remains endemic in many countries, particularly in Asia, Africa, and parts of Central and South America. While rare in Australia, exposure risks increase when travelling to regions where Rabies is prevalent.

Protecting yourself and your family with a pre-exposure Rabies vaccination in Brisbane ensures peace of mind, enabling you to focus on enjoying your travels. Call our team on (07) 3521 4333 to book a consultation.

Different Types of Rabies

There are three types of rabies — furious, paralytic, and non-classic. The non-classic rabies is a rare form that is associated with seizures and more severe motor and sensory symptoms. Please see further information about ‘furious rabies’ and ‘paralytic rabies’ below:

Furious Rabies

Furious Rabies is the more aggressive form, presenting with symptoms such as:

  • Hyperactivity and excitability
  • Hallucinations
  • Loss of coordination
  • Hydrophobia (fear of water)
  • Aerophobia (fear of drafts or fresh air)

This form progresses rapidly, with death typically occurring within a few days due to cardio-respiratory failure.

Paralytic Rabies

Paralytic Rabies, accounting for about 20% of cases, follows a less dramatic but prolonged course. Symptoms include:

  • Gradual muscle paralysis, starting at the site of the bite
  • Progressive weakness leading to a coma
  • Death, often due to respiratory failure

This form is more challenging to diagnose and is often misreported, contributing to underestimation of Rabies cases globally. By understanding the progression and forms of Rabies, individuals can appreciate the importance of preventive measures such as vaccination.

If you are travelling to a Rabies-prone area, schedule your vaccination consultation with Narangba Station Medical Centre to stay protected.

How is Rabies spread?

Rabies is primarily transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. Most commonly dogs, bats, and other mammals.

It can also spread if saliva from an infected animal comes into contact with broken skin or mucous membranes. For example, eyes, nose, or mouth.

Without prompt medical treatment, Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear.

This is why it's important to protect against the risk of rabies. Vaccination remains the best preventative action against rabies.

Rabies Symptoms

Rabies is a life-threatening disease with an incubation period that typically ranges from 2 to 3 months but can vary from as little as one week to as long as a year. Factors such as the location of the bite and the amount of virus introduced influence this timeframe.

Early symptoms of Rabies are often mild and include fever, general pain, and unusual sensations like tingling, pricking, or burning at the wound site. As the virus spreads to the central nervous system, it causes severe and fatal inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.

Once Rabies progresses to its clinical stage, it is almost always fatal. While management is possible, survival is rare and often results in significant neurological damage.

Rabies Vaccination Side Effects

Like all medications and vaccinations, although generally safe and well-tolerated, there is a slight risk of side effects. Some individuals may experience mild side effects, including:

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Stomach pain
  • Mild tiredness
  • Pain, redness, itching or swelling at the injection site

If, however, on the rare instance that you do receive any of the following side effects, please report these immediately to your doctor:

  • Allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives.
  • Swelling of the face, lips, or tongue.
  • Changes in vision.
  • Joint pain with fever.
  • Pain, tingling, numbness in the hands or feet.
  • Stiff neck and sensitivity to light.
  • Unusually weak or tired.

Our experienced team at Narangba Station Medical Centre will support you through the entire process.

Fees & Process

Rabies vaccinations are privately billed, with detailed costs explained during your initial consultation. It is vital to obtain an initial consultation before administering the vaccine to assess your personal circumstances. During your appointment, your doctor will assess your suitability for the vaccine, review your itinerary, and schedule your vaccinations accordingly.

Our vaccination process includes:

  • An initial consultation to assess your travel plans and medical history.
  • Administration of the vaccine (usually a three-dose series).
  • General travel health advice on reducing exposure risks when travelling.

Accelerated Schedule for Time-Sensitive Cases

If you’re in a hurry and unable to complete the usual three-dose schedule, your doctor may recommend an accelerated course of two vaccinations. This option provides effective protection in a shorter timeframe, but eligibility depends on your individual circumstances, which will be discussed during your consultation.

Our process is quick, convenient, and tailored to your travel needs. Schedule your consultation today by calling (07) 3521 4333 or booking online.
