What is Implanon?
Developed in 1998 and introduced to Australia in 2001, Implanon NXT is a small, flexible contraceptive implant inserted under the skin of your upper arm. This birth control implant releases a hormone called etonogestrel, which prevents pregnancy by stopping ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and thinning the uterine lining.
While it is important to remember that no contraceptive is 100% guaranteed, through decades of testing, Implanon is a 99% effective longer-term birth control method, which lasts for up to three years before requiring replacement or removal.

How Does Implanon Work?
Implanon works by steadily releasing a low dose of the hormone progestogen (etonogestrel) into your bloodstream. This hormone primarily prevents ovulation, stopping the release of eggs from your ovaries. Additionally, it thickens cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach any released eggs, and thins the uterine lining, reducing the chances of implantation.
Progestogen is one of the hormones used in the combined oral contraceptive pill (the pill) and is similar to the natural hormone progesterone which is made by the body.

Implanon Side Effects
While the side effects of Implanon implantation are rare, some women may experience side effects such as:
- Irregular bleeding
- Mood changes
- Weight gain
- Headaches
- Acne
Typically, most of the side effects improve over time as your body adjusts to the hormone. However, if the side effects persist, our doctors are available to help manage them and discuss alternative birth control options such as intrauterine devices (IUDs) and oral contraceptives.
