24 Hour Blood Pressure Monitoring
24hr Blood Pressure Monitoring Brisbane, QLD.
At Narangba Station Medical Centre, we understand that managing your cardiovascular health requires accurate and ongoing assessment. That’s why we offer advanced Ambulatory blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) or 24-hour blood pressure monitoring. It's a comprehensive test designed to track your blood pressure over a full day, providing critical insights into your heart health.
Ambulatory 24-hour blood pressure monitoring is an indispensable tool in the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension. The major advantage of 24-hour monitoring, over single clinic pressures, is its ability to detect 'white coat' and labile hypertension. Hence this service is particularly valuable for diagnosing hypertension and other blood pressure-related conditions that might go unnoticed during a single check-up.
Our 24-hour blood pressure monitoring is available on short notice, and we welcome both our existing patients and those referred by other clinics in Brisbane. Take control of your health by scheduling your monitoring today. You can book online or call us directly on (07) 3521 4333Â to speak with our team.

What is 24 hour Blood Pressure Monitoring?
24-hour blood pressure monitoring is a method used to measure your blood pressure at regular intervals over a 24-hour period. Unlike traditional blood pressure checks that only measure at a single point in time, this service allows your healthcare provider to get a complete picture of your blood pressure patterns throughout the day and night, including during sleep.Â
Due to the measuring at regular intervals, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring is often favoured over a single in-clinic test as the monitor can assist your doctor to diagnose conditions such as nocturnal hypertension, white coat hypertension, and masked hypertension.

How does it work?
During a 24-hour blood pressure monitoring session, a small, portable device is attached to your waist, with a cuff placed around your upper arm. The device is programmed to automatically inflate and record your blood pressure at set intervals - typically every 20-30 minutes during the day and every hour during the night.
You’ll carry on with your daily activities as usual, making sure to note any periods of exercise, stress, or other significant events in a provided diary. After 24 hours, similar to our 24-hour Holter Monitoring services, you’ll return the device to our clinic, where the recorded data will be downloaded and analysed. Your doctor will review the results and discuss any findings with you during a follow-up appointment.
What does 24hr Blood Pressure Monitoring detect?
24-hour blood pressure monitoring is important to providing a more accurate representation of your blood pressure over time. A single reading at the doctor’s office might not capture the full picture, particularly if your blood pressure fluctuates due to stress, activity levels, or sleep.Â
The continuous monitoring of your blood pressure over 24 hours helps identify these variations, enabling your doctor to make more informed decisions about your treatment plan.
Conditions such as isolated systolic hypertension, sustained hypertension, and white coat hypertension, are more accurately diagnosed with 24-hour monitoring, which can impact your treatment and management strategies.
How to Prepare?
To ensure accurate results, please follow these preparation guidelines for both the day of your appointment and during the testing period:
Clothing: Please wear loose-fitting clothes on the day of your appointment, as the cuff will need to be fitted to your upper arm and worn comfortably under your sleeve.
Activity: Continue your normal daily activities, but avoid heavy physical exercise or stress that could artificially alter your blood pressure readings.
Diet: Eat and drink as you normally would, but avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol, as these can influence your blood pressure.
Showering/Bathing: The device is not waterproof, so plan your bathing schedule accordingly. You will need to avoid getting the device wet during the monitoring period.
The Cost
Our 24-hour blood pressure monitoring service costs $110 with Medicare or $220 without Medicare. This includes the fitting of the device, the 24-hour recording period, and a detailed report on your results.
While this service is not covered by Medicare, some private health insurance providers may offer partial reimbursement. We recommend checking with your insurance provider to determine your coverage options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you still have questions about 24-hour Blood Pressure Monitoring? No problem! Here are the most commonly asked questions our GPs receive about 24-hour Blood Pressure Monitoring in Brisbane.
After the device has been returned to the clinic, the results of your 24-hour blood pressure monitoring test will take around 24-48 hours to be processed. The recorded data will be analysed, and a detailed report will be generated.
If you are a patient from a referring clinic, this report will then be sent to your referring GP as soon as possible. Most patients can expect their doctor to have the results within a few days of returning the device.
It is generally advised to limit exercise to light activities during your 24-hour blood pressure monitoring. Intense exercise could cause the cuff to dislodge or give inaccurate readings.
If you do engage in physical activity, make sure to note it in your activity diary for accurate interpretation of your results. You should include the activity type, the length of time and the intensity to assist your doctor when analysing the results.
No, 24-hour blood pressure monitors are not waterproof and should not be used in the shower.
You should avoid showering, bathing, or swimming during the monitoring period. It is generally advised that you plan your bathing schedule before and after the test.
While sleeping normally is generally fine, it is advised to avoid sleeping on the arm with the cuff to prevent discomfort.
The device is designed to monitor your blood pressure during sleep, which provides important data about your nocturnal blood pressure levels.
No, there are no side effects to wearing the blood pressure monitor. While some patients may experience minimal discomfort wearing the monitor as the cuff may feel tight when it inflates, the effects are generally mild and temporary.
Yes, you can drive while wearing a monitoring device. The device is small and portable, and it should not interfere with your ability to operate a vehicle safely. However, to be absolutely safe, please ensure that the monitor and cuff are securely placed before you start driving to avoid distraction.
24-hour blood pressure monitoring provides a more comprehensive and accurate assessment of your blood pressure than a single test taken at the doctor's office. It helps detect variations that a standard test over a couple of minutes might miss. These include, but are not limited to, white coat syndrome or masked hypertension. This provides your doctor with a better understanding of your overall cardiovascular health.
While a 24-hour blood pressure monitor is not specifically designed to diagnose stress, it can record changes in your blood pressure that occur during stressful situations.Â
As such, if you experience stress during the monitoring period, be sure to note it in your activity diary to assist your doctor with interpreting the results.
The suitability of 24-hour blood pressure monitoring will be determined by your doctor based on your health history and current symptoms.
However, generally speaking, 24-hour blood pressure monitors are particularly beneficial for individuals with suspected hypertension, those who have had inconsistent blood pressure readings, or those at risk for cardiovascular diseases.
