What is Antenatal Care?
Antenatal Care otherwise known as prenatal care is the health care you receive from your doctor whilst pregnant. It includes antenatal appointments, health checks and pregnancy monitoring.
At your antenatal appointments our experienced team at Narangba Station Medical Centre will monitor your blood pressure, weight and general health as well as your baby’s growth and development.
We can offer guidance around diet and nutrition, healthy lifestyle choices and answer any queries you may have regarding your pregnancy. Your antenatal care will also include education and counselling to help you understand what to expect during labour, birth and those early days of parenting.
Every pregnancy is different but by attending regular antenatal appointments we have seen reduce the risk of complications and improved outcomes for mum and baby.
How Antenatal Care Works?
Antenatal care helps you by offering regular and ongoing medical care during your pregnancy. With antenatal appointments, we will keep track of both your health and your baby’s growth, detect any complications as soon as possible and give you personalised tips on nutrition, exercise and lifestyle.
At your appointment, we may perform antenatal checks such as taking your blood pressure, weight, checking your baby’s growth and heart rate and conducting any necessary lab tests or scans. All these help ensure you’re staying healthy throughout your pregnancy and allow your doctors to give you the best advice should any concerns arise.
Education and counselling are also an important part of antenatal care, helping you to prepare for labour, birth and the first few months with your new baby.
When Should You Seek Medical Advice During Pregnancy?
Although the majority of pregnancies are perfectly normal and uneventful with regular antenatal care, some symptoms should not be ignored.
If you experience any of the following problems, please contact your doctor or visit your local antenatal clinic without delay. All of the below symptoms can be evaluated quickly with regular antenatal appointments and pregnancy checks.
The majority of these symptoms can be easily treated, but need early attention:
- Severe or continuous abdominal pain.
- Bleeding from the vagina or unusual discharge.
- Severe headaches or sudden swelling in your face, hands or feet.
- Blurred vision or dizziness.
- Decreased or unusual movements from your baby (later in pregnancy).
- Persistent nausea and vomiting.
- Fever or other signs of infection.
If you're ever concerned about any changes in how you are feeling, our caring team at Narangba Station Medical Centre are always here to help and listen to your worries. We can offer reassurance, as well as ongoing antenatal support and counselling during your pregnancy.
