Trusted ADHD Support for Adults and Children

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control and activity levels. While often diagnosed in childhood, ADHD can also be identified in adults, and the impacts can vary significantly from person to person. Some people experience challenges with focus and time management, while others may struggle with restlessness, forgetfulness or regulating emotions.

At Narangba Station Medical Centre, we recognise that living with ADHD can affect many aspects of daily life, including education, work, relationships and mental wellbeing.

Our GPs offer compassionate, ongoing support for patients who have already received an ADHD diagnosis and are seeking assistance with treatment monitoring, prescriptions, and general health and well-being.

What is ADHD?

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a condition that affects brain function and behaviour.

It is typically characterised by:

  • Difficulty concentrating or staying focused
  • Impulsivity or acting without thinking
  • Hyperactivity or excessive movement

There are three main types of ADHD:

  • Predominantly inattentive with trouble with focus and attention
  • Predominantly hyperactive - impulsive characterised by fidgeting, restlessness, impulsive behaviour
  • Combined type where we see a mix of inattentive and hyperactive symptoms

ADHD affects children, teenagers and adults. While some people outgrow certain symptoms, others continue to experience them into adulthood.

How is ADHD Diagnosed?

In Australia, ADHD is usually diagnosed by a specialist such as a psychiatrist, paediatrician or neurologist.

The process often involves:

  • Detailed interviews with the patient and family members
  • Behavioural questionnaires or checklists
  • Medical and developmental history
  • Observation across multiple settings (e.g. home, school, work)

Although the regulations in Queensland have changed to allow GPs to diagnose ADHD, Narangba Station Medical Centre does not provide an ADHD diagnosis by our GPs. We are here to assist you with referrals, shared-care prescribing and ongoing management following a formal diagnosis by a psychiatrist, paediatrician or neurologist.

For an assessment of ADHD, we advise that you discuss this with your usual GP who can provide a history and a referral for a thorough assessment by a specialist.

Your ADHD Care Pathway in Brisbane

Important Update on ADHD Diagnosis in Queensland

As of 1 December 2025, the Queensland Government has expanded access to General Practitioners to be able to diagnose ADHD under a statewide framework of clinical guidelines. However, Narangba Station Medical Centre will not be able to provide new diagnosis of ADHD through our GPs at this current time.

Our clinic is dedicated to providing safe and efficient care and we believe shared-care co-prescribing can still play a valuable role. This means we can only support you after you have been formally diagnosed by a psychiatrist or a paediatrician. Please note we can refer to clinics  who specialise in ADHD and ASD diagnosis with relatively wide availability of psychiatrists and minimal wait times for adults.

If you are looking to be diagnosed with ADHD by a GP, please make an appointment with your regular GP (who may be best placed to help you)  to discuss your request and under go formal assessment.

At Narangba Station Medical Centre, we understand that ADHD assessments and treatment can be daunting. That's why we have created a clear pathway for you to understand what to expect, from your first GP visit to ongoing support.

Step 1: Initial Consultation with Your GP

When you come in for your initial appointment, our goal is to really listen to you. We want to understand how difficulties with attention, focus, or restlessness are affecting your day-to-day life; at work, at home, and in your relationships.

We’ll also take the time to look at your health as a whole. Sometimes symptoms that seem like ADHD can be influenced by things like sleep patterns, stress, mood, or other underlying conditions. By considering the bigger picture, we can make sure you get the right support for your unique situation.

If we think ADHD might be a factor, we’ll help guide you through the next steps. That usually means providing a referral to a specialist (such as a psychiatrist) for a thorough diagnostic assessment, so you can get clarity and a personalised treatment plan.

Step 2: Diagnostic Assessment

Once you are referred, your psychiatrist or other mental health professional will assess you to get a comprehensive understanding of what is going on. This is a detailed and collaborative process to help you feel heard.

This may include having you fill out a few questionnaires regarding your symptoms and daily life. They may also speak with people close to you, like family, friends, teachers or co-workers, to see how your symptoms manifest in various contexts.

The assessment is based on a set of diagnostic criteria (DSM-5). This allows for your symptoms to be consistent, significant and affecting multiple areas of your life. The assessment process allows your psychiatrist to make an accurate diagnosis and help you get the treatment that is right for you.

Step 3: Diagnosis & Treatment Plan

Once your specialist has completed the assessment, they will review all the information and, if ADHD is confirmed, provide you with a clear diagnosis. This step is about giving you clarity and understanding (knowing exactly what’s happening and how it affects your daily life).

Your specialist will then work with you to create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your needs. This may include therapy, lifestyle adjustments, or medication - whichever combination is best for supporting your wellbeing and helping you reach your goals.

As part of this process, if medication is recommended, the specialist will write a letter to the treating GP authorising us to complete the ADHD S8 Psychostimulant Prescribing Form (an Admin/Application fee applies for completion and liaison with the Queensland Poisons Department).

This form allows the treating GP to have the authority to prescribe and ensures that any prescribed medication is safe, legally compliant, and can be managed effectively. The form is provided to us so we can work closely with your specialist to co-manage your care and support you with ongoing monitoring.

This step ensures that you have a clear plan, the right supports in place, and a safe pathway to start your treatment confidently.

Step 4: Starting Treatment

Once your treatment plan is in place, we’ll help you begin your journey toward managing ADHD effectively. If medication is part of your plan, we’ll work closely with your specialist through a shared care arrangement to ensure it’s safe, effective, and tailored to you.

Our role is to provide ongoing support by checking in regularly to see how you’re doing, monitoring for any side effects, and adjusting your plan as needed. We’re here to make sure you feel supported every step of the way, helping you reach your goals and maintain your wellbeing.

Please note that monitoring these medications generally also includes ECGs (Separate fee applies) and Urine Drug tests (Separate fee applies) at the GP clinic, as per the letter from the psychiatrist.

Our Role in ADHD Co-Management

At Narangba Station Medical Centre, we provide co-management support for patients who have already been diagnosed with ADHD by a qualified specialist. Co-management means working in partnership with your psychiatrist, paediatrician, or neurologist to help you maintain safe, consistent care in a local, accessible setting.

While your specialist remains responsible for your formal diagnosis and overall treatment plan, our GPs can support you with:

  • Ongoing Prescription Management which means once your specialist has initiated ADHD medication, we may be able to provide repeat prescriptions under a shared care arrangement.
  • Health Monitoring where we’ll keep track of how your treatment is affecting your physical and mental well-being, and flag any issues that may need review.
  • Medication Side Effect Reviews for those experiencing unwanted effects. We can assess symptoms and liaise with your specialist to make adjustments where needed.
  • Referrals to Allied Health which includes psychologists, dietitians, or sleep specialists for comprehensive, wrap-around support.
  • Routine GP Care because your general health matters too. We support the whole person, not just the diagnosis.

Already Diagnosed with ADHD? We Can Help Co-Manage Your Care

We understand the importance of continuity in ADHD care. By working alongside your treating specialist, our GPs can help streamline your experience, reduce gaps between reviews, and ensure you stay supported in everyday life.

Treatment Options for ADHD

At Narangba Station Medical Centre, we understand that ADHD affects everyone differently. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution — we’ll work with you and your specialist to create a plan that fits your life.

Some of the ways we can support you include:

  • Some people benefit from behavioural therapy that helps with routines, time management, and coping strategies. Others find that simple lifestyle changes, like getting regular exercise, keeping a consistent schedule, or improving nutrition, can make a noticeable difference.
  • Medication can also be part of treatment. If it’s recommended, we’ll help you manage it safely in collaboration with your specialist, and we’ll check in regularly to make sure it’s working for you.
  • ADHD can sometimes come with challenges like anxiety, low mood, or feeling overwhelmed. Support from a psychologist or counsellor can give you practical tools and help you feel more in control.

Throughout your journey, we’ll be here to support you. Regular follow-ups allow us to see how you’re doing, make adjustments if needed, and ensure that your plan keeps helping you in real life. You’re not alone in this. We’re here to walk alongside you every step of the way.

ADHD Medications: Driving, Work and Sports

Many adults and children taking ADHD medications live active lives — they drive, work in safety-critical industries like mining, or compete in sports. ADHD medications are generally safe and effective for everyday life, including driving, work, and sports. The key is to know the rules, monitor side effects, and communicate with your GP to ensure safety and compliance.

While this is normal, there are important considerations to be aware of.

Driving

  • Evidence shows that untreated ADHD increases risky driving, including accidents and infringements. Treatment with ADHD medications can reduce these risks.
  • Always check for side effects (e.g., drowsiness, blurred vision, poor concentration) from any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) before driving.
  • Combining medications may increase side effects, so discuss this with your GP or pharmacist.
  • If you are taking ADHD medications, you do not need to disclose to the police during routine saliva tests, as ADHD medications are not detected. Keeping a GP letter confirming your prescription may be helpful in rare cases.
  • For interstate travel, be aware that rules may differ between states.

Work

  • Workplaces involving heavy machinery or safety-critical tasks may require drug testing.
  • Urine tests may detect ADHD medications and show positive for amphetamines.
  • It is normal to inform your employer and provide a letter from your doctor outlining your prescribed ADHD medication.

Sports

  • Athletes taking ADHD medications may require a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) to compete in sports where stimulants are normally prohibited.
  • The TUE allows athletes to use prescribed medication for ADHD safely and legally.

Applications for a TUE are submitted through Sport Integrity Australia.

Fees & Medicare Rebate

We're a mixed billing practice, and a partial Medicare rebate is available for Medicare cardholders.

Consultation fees are higher than our standard fees for all ADHD-related appointments. There are costs for ADHD Medication prescriptions (Can be requested over the telephone/online; please note that no Medicare rebates apply for these). Where ECG and Urine drug tests are required, they also do not attract a Medicare rebate.

Please speak with our reception team if you have any questions about fees or billing. For a detailed overview of practice fees, please visit our Fees page.
