What is Healthy Weight?

Healthy weight is a measure that reflects the right balance between body fat and muscle mass, often determined using tools such as the Body Mass Index (BMI). A healthy BMI typically falls between 18.5 and 24.9, but it's important to remember that everyone’s healthy weight is different. Factors such as age, muscle mass, and overall health should be considered when determining what a healthy weight means for you. Our doctors can help to assess this based on your individual factors.

Why is it important?

Maintaining a healthy weight is about more than just looking good - it’s about reducing the risk of serious health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. A healthy weight can improve your energy levels, enhance your mobility, and contribute to a better quality of life. Managing your weight effectively can also help to prevent future health complications and can lead to a longer, more fulfilling life.

Causes of Weight Gain & Obesity

Weight gain and obesity can result from a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Common contributors include an unbalanced diet high in processed foods, a sedentary lifestyle, hormonal imbalances, stress, and certain medical conditions. Social and psychological factors such as emotional eating and lack of access to healthy food can also play a role. Weight gain can also be a symptom of menopause for women aged between 40 and 60. Understanding the root cause of weight gain is essential in developing a successful management plan.

What to Expect

During your first consultation, one of our compassionate GPs will take a comprehensive health assessment, including your medical history, lifestyle habits, and weight loss goals. Together, you’ll develop a personalised management plan, which may include dietary advice, medications, physical activity guidelines, and psychological support. Follow-up appointments will monitor your progress and adjust your plan as necessary to ensure lasting success.

Management Options for Weight Loss

There is no one-size-fits-all solution to weight loss, which is why we explore a range of management options with you at Narangba Station Medical Centre. These include:

Nutritional Counselling

Learn how to make healthier food choices and develop a balanced eating plan that fits your lifestyle.

Behavioural Therapy

Support for overcoming emotional and psychological barriers to weight loss.

Physical Activity Recommendations

Guidance on incorporating regular exercise into your routine, tailored to your abilities and preferences.

Medications

In some cases, medications may be prescribed to assist with weight management.

Referrals to Specialists

For more complex cases, we can refer you to allied health professionals, including dietitians, physiotherapists, and endocrinologists.

Weight Loss Medication Eligibility

At Narangba Station Medical Centre, our doctors can prescribe weight loss medication when necessary, based on individual eligibility. You may qualify for this treatment if your Body Mass Index (BMI) exceeds 26 or your waist circumference is over 80cm, and if previous attempts at weight loss through diet and lifestyle changes have not been successful.

Weight loss medication options include an easy-to-use injection or a daily pill, both designed to reduce appetite, curb cravings, and prolong feelings of fullness. However, this treatment may not be suitable for individuals with type 1 diabetes, a history of pancreatitis, certain thyroid conditions, or those who are underweight. If the treatment is deemed unsuitable for your health needs, alternative options may be explored with specialist referrals.

Weight loss is a gradual process, and the amount you can lose varies depending on factors such as your starting weight, health, and commitment to lifestyle changes. Generally, losing 0.5 to 1 kilogram per week is considered healthy and sustainable.

No referral is needed to book an appointment for weight loss management at our clinic. However, if specialist services are required, our GPs may provide you with a referral.

In some cases, medications may be prescribed as part of a weight loss management plan. This will depend on your specific health needs, and our doctors at Narangba Station Medical Centre will discuss whether this option is appropriate for you.
