What is a Heart Health Check?
Carried out by our GPs in Narangba, a Heart Health Check is a detailed assessment that evaluates your risk of developing cardiovascular disease. This includes heart attacks, strokes, and other heart-related conditions.Â
The check involves a combination of medical tests and a thorough review of your overall health to determine the stress and strain on your cardiovascular system. Key components of the tests include measuring your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar levels. In addition, we'll also assess your weight and body mass index (BMI).
Our doctors will also gather important information about your medical and family history. Your lifestyle factors, such as your diet, exercise routine, smoking status, and alcohol consumption, will also be considered. If necessary, we may also assess you for diabetes or other conditions that contribute to heart disease risk.
The goal of the Heart Health Check is to provide a personalised risk profile. This will identify early signs of cardiovascular disease or highlights areas where you may be at increased risk. This proactive approach helps you take preventive actions through lifestyle changes or medications. In doing so, it will ultimately lower your risk of serious heart events in the future. So by having regular Heart Health Checks, you can monitor and manage your heart health effectively.
Why is a Heart Health Check important?
Too often, people wait until a physical symptom is present before getting their heart checked. However, just because we may feel okay throughout our day to day lives, it’s important to continually measure the healthiness of our insides too.
A Heart Health Check is essential because heart disease is often a silent condition that progresses without noticeable symptoms until a serious event, like a heart attack or stroke, occurs. These checks help detect risk factors early. This gives you the opportunity to address them before they lead to more severe health problems. Because of this, regular checks empower you to take proactive steps to protect your heart and overall well-being.
Key Risk Factors
There are several risk factors for heart disease, many of which are preventable or manageable through lifestyle changes and medical intervention. A Heart Health Check helps you and your doctor assess these key risk factors, which include the below.
By identifying and addressing these risk factors, a Heart Health Check enables you to make informed decisions about your health. This could include, for example, adopting a heart-healthy diet, increasing physical activity, quitting smoking, or starting medications to control blood pressure or cholesterol.Â
Heart Disease Symptoms
Because heart disease develops silently, it is difficult to know whether your heart is healthy or not until you start experiencing symptoms. The telltale signs of a heart problem can vary due to the different types of heart disease. However, common warning signs of heart disease include:
If you experience any of these symptoms, especially if they are persistent or severe, it is important to seek medical advice immediately. Early detection and treatment of heart disease by having a Heart Health Check can significantly improve outcomes and reduce the risk of life-threatening complications.
Who should get a Heart Health Check?
While a heart check is advised for patients of all ages, anyone aged 40 years or over (30 years and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people), should consider having a Heart Health Check. It is especially recommended for individuals with a family history of heart disease or those with existing conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes. Even if you feel healthy, a check can reveal hidden risks.

What To Expect?
A Seniors Health Check typically takes around 45 minutes to an hour. During a Seniors Health Check, you can expect a thorough and detailed evaluation of various aspects of your health to ensure a holistic understanding of your well-being. Below is a list of checks and evaluations you can expect:
Medical History Review
Your doctor will ask about your personal and family history of heart disease, including any past health conditions, medications you’re taking, and lifestyle habits such as diet, exercise, smoking, and alcohol consumption.
Lifestyle Assessment
Your doctor will discuss your diet, exercise habits, smoking status, and alcohol use. This will be used to evaluate how these factors are affecting your heart health.
Risk Calculation
Based on the information gathered, your doctor will use a risk calculator to estimate your risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next five years. This tool takes into account your test results, age, gender, and other factors.
Cholesterol & Blood Sugar Testing
Blood tests are used to measure cholesterol levels (both good and bad cholesterol) and blood glucose levels. These help to detect any signs of high cholesterol or diabetes, both of which increase your risk of heart disease.
Blood Pressure Measurement
High blood pressure is one of the most significant risk factors for heart disease. So checking your blood pressure is a key part of the assessment.
Body Mass Index (BMI) Calculation
Your height and weight will be measured to calculate your BMI. This calculation helps determine if you’re at a healthy weight or if your weight could be contributing to your cardiovascular risk.
Personalised Advice
After assessing your risk factors, your doctor will provide tailored recommendations to improve your heart health. This may include lifestyle changes such as eating a heart-healthy diet, increasing physical activity, quitting smoking, and possibly starting medications to control blood pressure or cholesterol if needed. It may also include additional checks such as 24-hour Blood Pressure or Holter Monitoring.
