Symptoms of B12 deficiency?

Vitamin B12 deficiency can affect people in many different ways. This essential vitamin supports the production of red blood cells, helps maintain a healthy nervous system and contributes to energy levels and cognitive function. While B12 is typically found in animal-based foods such as meat, fish, eggs and dairy, some people may have trouble absorbing it - especially due to certain health conditions, medications or dietary choices like veganism.

A deficiency may lead to a wide range of symptoms, including:

  • Ongoing fatigue or low energy
  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
  • Low mood or irritability
  • Pale skin or a yellow tinge
  • Tingling or numbness in the hands and feet
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness or feeling faint
  • Mouth ulcers or sore tongue
  • Blurred vision

Some of these symptoms may also be caused by iron deficiency. Our GPs can help determine the cause and assess whether a B12 injection, iron infusion, or another treatment may be appropriate for you.

Who could benefit from B12 Injections?

Vitamin B12 injections may be recommended for a wide range of people - not just those with a confirmed deficiency. You may benefit from a B12 shot if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with low B12 levels

  • Follow a vegetarian or vegan diet

  • Have absorption issues (e.g. due to coeliac disease, Crohn’s disease, or gastric surgery)

  • Are over the age of 50, when absorption naturally decreases

  • Take certain medications such as metformin or proton pump inhibitors

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding and at risk of deficiency

  • Feel persistently tired or mentally foggy without a known cause

  • Have been advised by your doctor based on symptoms or recent test results

How does it work?

Vitamin B12 injections deliver a concentrated dose of hydroxocobalamin directly into the muscle. This allows the vitamin to be absorbed more effectively than through the digestive system, making it ideal for those with dietary limitations or absorption issues.

Before receiving the injection, one of our GPs may consult with you to determine whether B12 treatment is clinically appropriate. If suitable, your injection may be administered during the same appointment on the day. We often have B12 injections in stock and more often than not, there is no script required.

Once you have had your initial B12 Injection, you do not necessarily have to see the doctor again for future injections. You can book directly with the nurse where a small treatment room and administration fee will apply.

Side Effects

B12 injections are generally well tolerated and considered safe. Some people may experience minor side effects such as:

  • Mild redness or swelling at the injection site
  • A feeling of warmth or flushing
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Slight nausea or an upset stomach
  • Rarely, an allergic reaction

If you have any concerns after receiving your injection, please contact the clinic.

Fees & Medicare Rebate

A consultation with one of our GPs may be required to assess whether a B12 injection is suitable for you. Medicare rebates are available for eligible Medicare card holders. The cost of the injection will be advised prior to proceeding, and the service may be provided on the same day if clinically appropriate.

For a detailed overview of all our practice fees, please visit our Fees page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you still have questions about B12 deficiencies or B12 Injections? No problem! Here are the most commonly asked questions our GPs receive about safe administration of B12 Injections in Brisbane.

Yes, in most cases, your GP will recommend a blood test before starting B12 treatment. This is to confirm whether you have a vitamin B12 deficiency and to determine the severity. It ensures the injection is necessary and helps tailor the most appropriate treatment plan for your needs. In some situations, like a known history of deficiency or specific medical conditions, your doctor may proceed without testing – but generally, a blood test is the first step.

The frequency in which you will require B12 injections will depend on your individual health circumstances. Some people require an initial course of more frequent injections (e.g. weekly or fortnightly) to build up their levels, followed by maintenance doses every few months. Others may only need a short-term boost. Your doctor will create a personalised schedule based on the cause of your deficiency, how your body responds to treatment, and whether it’s a long-term or temporary issue.

Yes, B12 injections can be better than tables if you have absorption issues (like pernicious anaemia or gut conditions) or need a quicker result. Injections deliver B12 directly into your bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system, which makes them more effective in some cases. That said, high-dose oral supplements work well for many people too. Your GP will help you weigh up the pros and cons based on your symptoms, blood test results, and health history.

No, you cannot just book a B12 injection without a referral or an initial consultation. Our doctors will discuss your symptoms, medical history, and possibly recommend a blood test before administering the injection. This step is essential to ensure the treatment is safe and appropriate for your situation. Once confirmed, we can arrange your injection during the same visit or book it in shortly after.

Like most injections, the B12 injection is only mildly uncomfortable with most people describing it as a small pinch or brief stinging sensation. It’s typically administered into the muscle of the upper arm. The discomfort is minimal and over in seconds. If you’re feeling anxious, let your GP or nurse know – we’re happy to make the process as comfortable as possible.

The time it takes to feel better after a B12 injection will vary. However, many people start noticing improvements within a few days to a week. Increased energy, clearer thinking, improved mood, and reduced pins and needles are common benefits. However, if your deficiency was severe or long-standing, it may take longer for your body to fully recover. Your GP will monitor your progress and adjust your treatment if needed.

Yes, B12 injections are generally safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, particularly if you have a diagnosed deficiency. In fact, maintaining healthy B12 levels is important for both your wellbeing and your baby’s development. However, you should always consult your GP or obstetrician before starting or continuing treatment to ensure it's right for your stage of pregnancy or lactation.
