What is Healthy Weight?
Healthy weight is a measure that reflects the right balance between body fat and muscle mass, often determined using tools such as the Body Mass Index (BMI). A healthy BMI typically falls between 18.5 and 24.9, but it's important to remember that everyone’s healthy weight is different.
Factors such as age, muscle mass, and overall health should be considered when determining what a healthy weight means for you. Our doctors can help to assess this based on your individual factors.
Why is it important?
Looking after your weight isn’t just about appearance, it’s about protecting your overall health. Carrying extra weight can increase the risk of conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.
We regularly support our patients with diabetes management, healthy heart checks, and blood pressure monitoring, so we see first-hand how much of a difference prevention can make.
When you’re at a healthier weight, you’ll often notice more energy, better mobility, and an improved quality of life. Most importantly, managing your weight well now can help reduce future health risks and set you up for a longer, more fulfilling life.
Causes of Weight Gain & Obesity
Weight gain and obesity can result from a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Common contributors include an unbalanced diet high in processed foods, a sedentary lifestyle, hormonal imbalances, stress, and certain medical conditions.
Social and psychological factors such as emotional eating and lack of access to healthy food can also play a role. Weight gain can also be a symptom of menopause for women aged between 40 and 60. Understanding the root cause of weight gain is essential in developing a successful management plan.
What to Expect
We know that talking about weight can feel sensitive, and many people put off seeking help because they worry about being judged. At Narangba Station Medical Centre, you can expect a safe, supportive space where your concerns are listened to with respect.
What you won’t find here are quick fixes or fad diets. Instead, we’ll focus on realistic, sustainable changes that fit into your life. Our role is to guide you, encourage you, and adjust your plan along the way so it actually works for you.
Most importantly, you can expect ongoing support (not just in the medical side of things), but in celebrating your progress and helping you stay on track when life gets busy.
Management Options for Weight Loss
At Narangba Station Medical Centre, we know that losing weight isn’t the same journey for everyone. What works for one person may not work for another (and that’s okay). Our role is to work with you to find an approach that feels realistic, supportive, and sustainable for your lifestyle.
Here are some of the ways we may be able to help:
Comprehensive Health Assessment
We’ll start by looking at your overall health (including any underlying conditions, lifestyle factors, or medications), so we can safely guide your weight loss journey.
Nutritional Counselling
We’ll sit down with you to talk through your eating habits and help you make healthier choices that suit your routine. It’s about finding balance and building habits that you can stick with long-term.
As part of your care, we can also connect you with a nutritionist for more specialised support. Together, we’ll give you practical tools and guidance so you can make food choices that not only support weight loss but also improve your overall health and energy levels.
Medication Options
In some cases, weight loss medication may be appropriate. If that’s the case for you, we’ll explain your options clearly and make sure you’re supported every step of the way.
Physical Activity Guidance
Exercise doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Together, we’ll explore safe, practical ways to add movement into your day, tailored to your abilities and preferences.
Behavioural Support
Sometimes weight gain is tied to stress, emotions, or habits that feel hard to break. We can help you recognise these patterns and give you strategies to overcome them, so you feel more in control.
If needed, we can also prepare a Mental Health Care Plan, which gives you access to additional support from a psychologist or counsellor. This way, you’re not only addressing weight loss but also building healthier ways to manage stress and emotions for the long term.
Referrals to Specialists
As your GP, we’ll be with you every step of the way. Where extra support is needed, we can connect you with allied health professionals (including dietitians, physiotherapists, and endocrinologists) to give you the best possible care.
Our goal is to provide ongoing support, not quick fixes. Together, we’ll work on a plan that helps you feel healthier, more confident, and more in control of your wellbeing.
Weight Loss Medication Eligibility
At Narangba Station Medical Centre we can offer medication for weight loss when required and if you are eligible. You may be eligible for weight loss medication if your Body Mass Index (BMI) is greater than 26 or waist measurement is over 80cm and you have unsuccessfully tried to lose weight in the past with diet and lifestyle changes.
Weight loss medication can be provided as a simple injection or a daily tablet that work to help you feel less hungry and control your cravings and increase the amount of time you feel full. Weight loss medication is not suitable for those with type 1 diabetes, a history of pancreatitis or certain thyroid conditions. Weight loss medication is also not suitable if you are underweight. If the treatment is not appropriate for you, alternative options may be considered, and we can provide referrals to specialists.
Fees & Medicare Rebate
We're a mixed billing practice and a partial Medicare rebate will be available for Medicare cardholders. The fees outlined below are strictly for your consultation. Additional fees may apply for any treatments or scripts as recommended by your doctor.
