What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a chronic condition where tissue similar to the endometrium (the lining inside the uterus) grows in places it shouldn't, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or the pelvic lining. This displaced tissue still behaves like uterine lining, thickening, breaking down, and bleeding with each menstrual cycle, but because it has no way to exit the body, it becomes trapped. This leads to pain and complications.

While there is no known cure for endometriosis, early diagnosis and treatment could help manage symptoms and reduce long-term effects.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

Endometriosis symptoms can vary from person to person, and some individuals may experience mild discomfort, while others endure severe pain. Symptoms may include:

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, we encourage you to book a consultation with one of our experienced GPs and take the first step to understanding and managing endometriosis.

The Impact of Living with Endometriosis

Living with endometriosis can significantly affect various aspects of your daily life, both physically and emotionally. The chronic pain and discomfort often associated with the condition may interfere with work, social activities, and personal relationships, leading to feelings of frustration or isolation. For many, managing symptoms can be exhausting, as flare-ups are often unpredictable and vary in intensity. Additionally, the emotional toll of dealing with fertility concerns or long-term health complications can create additional stress. However, by getting proper management and support, it is possible to improve quality of life and regain a sense of control over the condition.

Treatment Options for Endometriosis

While there is no definitive cure for endometriosis, there are a variety of treatment options that could help manage the condition and improve your symptoms. Treatment plans with our doctors at Narangba Station Medical Centre are very much tailored to you individually, considering the severity of your symptoms and your personal health goals. Your GP will work with you to create a personalised plan that takes your symptoms, lifestyle, and health into account. Treatment options may include:

Pain Management Strategies

Over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers may help reduce inflammation and ease menstrual pain. While effective for many, their impact may vary depending on the severity of symptoms.

Surgical Options

Laparoscopic surgery can remove or destroy endometrial tissue, providing pain relief in more severe cases. While surgery can be effective, symptoms may return, making ongoing management necessary.

Hormonal Therapies

Birth control pills, hormone patches, or IUDs can help regulate or stop the menstrual cycle, potentially reducing pain and slowing tissue growth. Side effects may occur, so it’s important to discuss options with your GP.

Lifestyle Changes

Regular exercise, a balanced diet, good sleep hygiene, and stress management techniques can help manage symptoms over time. Your GP will discuss your current lifestyle factors and may make recommendations of changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you still have questions about treatment and care available for endometriosis? No problem! Here are the most commonly asked questions our GPs receive about endometriosis treatment in Brisbane.

The exact cause of endometriosis is not fully understood, but it may be linked to genetic, hormonal, and immune system factors.

Endometriosis can be difficult to diagnose, but our GPs will work closely with you and may recommend an ultrasound or a laparoscopy (a minor surgical procedure) to confirm the diagnosis.

Yes, endometriosis could impact fertility in some cases. It’s one of the common causes of infertility, though many women with endometriosis are still able to conceive naturally or with treatment. If this is a goal for you personally, our doctors will work with you during your consultations and treatment plans to explore your options.

Many women with endometriosis can conceive, though some may require medical assistance. If you're trying to conceive and are concerned about how endometriosis could affect your fertility, it’s important to discuss your options with one of our GPs during your consultation.

Pain management strategies include medications, hormone therapy, and, in some cases, surgical treatment. Our team at Narangba Station Medical Centre will work with you to find the most suitable treatment based on your symptoms.

While surgery may help reduce symptoms by removing endometrial tissue, it does not guarantee a permanent cure. Symptoms may recur after surgery, and ongoing management could be necessary.

If you are experiencing chronic pelvic pain, heavy periods, or other symptoms associated with endometriosis, it’s important to seek medical advice. Early diagnosis could help prevent more severe complications in the future. We highly recommend scheduling a consultation with one of our GPs at Narangba Station Medical Centre and get the support you need.
