Protect your family from Hepatitis A

Although Hepatitis A is uncommon in Australia, its ability to spread quickly and lead to significant illness highlights the importance of prevention. Safeguard your family’s health by booking a consultation with our dedicated and caring team today.

Where is Hepatitis A found?

While Hepatitis A is rare in Australia, it is still prevalent in parts of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Central and South America. Areas with inadequate sanitation and poor water quality are particularly high-risk.

Before travelling to these destinations, and during your travels, it is advised to take the following precautions to minimise your risk of infection:

  • Ensure you are vaccinated well in advance of your trip.
  • Drink bottled or treated water only.
  • Avoid consuming raw or undercooked foods.
  • Practise frequent handwashing, particularly before meals.

Our travel health consultations are designed to give you practical advice and ensure you are fully prepared for your journey. Call (07) 3521 4333 or book online today.

How is Hepatitis A spread?

Hepatitis A is a viral infection of the liver that's primarily spread through the fecal-oral route. This means that an uninfected person can get the virus by ingesting food or water that has been contaminated with the feces of an infected person.

While the Hepatitis A vaccination provides robust protection against the virus, practising good hygiene remains essential to minimise your risk exposure.

Hepatitis A Symptoms

Common symptoms of Hepatitis A may include:

  • General feeling of unwellness
  • Fatigue or lethargy
  • Fever
  • Nausea and loss of appetite
  • Abdominal discomfort or pain
  • Joint aches
  • Dark-coloured urine and pale stools
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)

These symptoms usually develop 2–7 weeks after exposure to the virus and typically resolve within two months. However, in some cases, individuals may experience prolonged illness lasting up to six months.

Long-Term Protection

Receiving the full course of the Hepatitis A vaccine provides long-term immunity, often lasting up to 20 years or more.

In some cases, a single booster dose may be recommended to ensure continued protection, particularly for those at ongoing risk.

However, routine boosters are not needed for Diptheria and Tetanus, as protection from these vaccines lasts significantly longer.

Hepatitis A Vaccination Side Effects

The Hepatitis A vaccine is widely regarded as safe and effective. Most people experience no side effects, but some patients may notice:

  • Mild pain or redness at the injection site
  • A low-grade fever
  • Temporary fatigue

Serious side effects are extremely rare. If you have concerns about your reaction to the vaccine, contact a healthcare professional for guidance.

Fees & Process

The Hepatitis A vaccine may be available through the National Immunisation Program for eligible individuals in Queensland. To check whether you qualify and to view the recommended dosage schedule, please check here. At Narangba Station Medical Centre, all consultations are privately billed. A consultation with your doctor is required before receiving any vaccinations to confirm your eligibility, assess any potential health risks, and ensure the vaccine is suitable for your needs. During this appointment, your doctor will review your medical history, explain the vaccination schedule, and discuss any associated fees.

Once your initial consultation is complete and a vaccination plan is established, there’s typically no need for additional doctor visits. You can arrange follow-up vaccination appointments directly with our nurses or reception team at NSMC. For ease of scheduling, we recommend using our telephone service, which is more straightforward than booking online.

The entire process is simple, efficient, and designed to suit the needs of you and your family. To arrange your consultation, call NSMC on (07) 3521 4333 or book online today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you still have questions about preventative care and vaccinations available for Hepatitis A? No problem! Here are the most commonly asked questions our GPs receive about Hepatitis A Vaccinations in Brisbane.

It’s best to get the Hepatitis A vaccine at least two weeks before departure. This provides your body with time to build immunity, although earlier vaccination is always preferable for added peace of mind.

Yes, the vaccine is safe for children and can be administered as part of their routine immunisation schedule. For children travelling to high-risk areas, the vaccine provides crucial protection.

Yes, Hepatitis A is highly contagious, particularly in close living or caregiving settings. Vaccination is the most effective way to reduce the risk of transmission.

A full course of the vaccine offers long-term immunity, often for decades. Your doctor can advise if and when a booster dose is needed, depending on your circumstances.

If you’ve completed the full vaccine course in the past, you’re likely to have long-lasting immunity. However, if you received your vaccination many years ago or are at ongoing risk, a booster may be recommended.

Yes, there is a combination vaccine available that protects against both Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B. This may be recommended depending on your travel plans and risk factors.

Good hygiene practices are essential, including washing hands with soap and water, avoiding untreated water, and steering clear of raw or undercooked foods in high-risk areas. Combined with vaccination, these measures provide strong protection.
