What is 24 hour Holter Monitoring?
Released for commercial use in 1962, a Holter monitor is an advanced diagnostic tool that records your heart’s electrical activity continuously over 24 hours. Unlike a standard ECG, which provides a brief snapshot of your heart’s activity, Holter monitoring captures your heart's rhythm over an extended period of time which makes it possible to detect intermittent abnormalities that could be missed otherwise.Â
Holter monitor tests are particularly useful for patients who experience symptoms like dizziness, palpitations, or unexplained fainting, but do not exhibit these symptoms during a routine ECG. If you suffer from any of these symptoms, Holter monitor testing could be beneficial to isolating the issue.

How does it work?
The Holter monitor is a small, portable device that you wear on a belt or strap across your shoulder. Electrodes are then attached to your chest to capture your heart's electrical signals and send them to the monitor. For the 24-hour period, you can go about your usual activities while the monitor records your heart's activity.Â
Similar to our 24 hour blood pressure monitoring services, after the monitoring period, you’ll return the device to your healthcare provider, where the recorded data will be analysed, and a detailed report will be generated for your doctor. This report will then be discussed during your follow-up appointment. Alternatively, if you are being referred by another clinic, a follow-up appointment will need to be scheduled with your referring GP to discuss your results.
What does a Holter monitor detect?
Once fitted, a Holter monitor records your heart’s electrical signals throughout the day and night. It tracks your heart rate, rhythm, and any irregularities, such as arrhythmias or pauses, that might not show up during a brief ECG. The continuous recording helps your doctor identify patterns and make informed decisions about your heart health.Â
By analysing the data, the monitor can help in detecting conditions such as atrial fibrillation, tachycardia, or bradycardia, and can also assess how well certain treatments are working. As we age, obtaining regular health assessments is vital to ensuring that we remain healthy and our Holter monitoring services provide advanced recording of your heart's activity.
How to Prepare?
To prepare for your Holter monitor test, we recommend bathing or showering before the device is fitted. During testing, the device cannot get wet as it is not waterproof and therefore showering is not advised. In addition, it is generally advised to avoid applying any lotions, deodorants or powder to your chest on the day of your appointment. This is to ensure that the electrodes (sensor) can stick properly when applied.
On the day of your appointment, please wear loose clothing and a two-piece outfit as you will be required to remove your clothing from the waist up.
In general, your appointment should take no longer than 20 minutes.
The Cost
Our 24-hour Holter monitoring service costs $110 for all patients. This fee covers the application and removal of the monitor, the 24-hour recording period, and a detailed analysis report. If you are a referring patient, there are no additional charges to send this report to your GP.
While Medicare does not cover this fee, some private health insurance plans might offer partial reimbursement. Please check with your insurance provider for details.
