Common STD Checks
Our doctors can organise testing for a range of sexually transmitted infections. Here’s a little more information about each type of sexually transmitted disease or infection:
Your GP can discuss your health in more detail and recommend which tests may be suitable for you. Our focus is always on supporting your overall well-being in a way that’s sensitive and reassuring.
What’s Involved in an STD Check?
Depending on your concerns and sexual history, your doctor may recommend:
- Urine tests
- Swabs (genital, throat, or rectal)
- Blood tests
- Physical examination if needed
No matter what testing involves, all discussions and results are handled with complete confidentiality. We’re here to support you and answer your questions.
STD Signs & Symptoms
Many STDs show no symptoms at all, but some signs to watch for include:
- Unusual discharge from the vagina or penis
- Burning or pain when urinating
- Sores, blisters or lumps on the genitals or mouth
- Itching, redness, or irritation
- Pain during sex
- Lower abdominal pain
- Unexplained rashes or flu-like symptoms
If you notice any of these or just want peace of mind, book a check-up with your GP. RACGP’s ‘Red Book’ (guidelines for preventive health in general practice) recommends regular opportunistic screenings for these infections in sexually active people with risk factors.
Why Regular STD Testing Matters
STDs and STIs can result in serious health complications if not detected early. These can include infertility, chronic pain, increased risk of HIV transmission and severe infections. Screening tests for STDs and STIs can diagnose infections in their early stages, sometimes even before symptoms or complications arise.
New relationships, multiple partners, or just because you want to take care of your general health - regular STD checks are a great idea.
STD Prevention & Safe Sex
Tips for Protecting Yourself & Others
While no method is 100% foolproof, you can significantly reduce your risk by:
- Using condoms and dental dams correctly every time
- Limiting your number of sexual partners
- Getting vaccinated for preventable infections like HPV and Hepatitis B
- Having open conversations with partners about sexual health and testing
Our GPs can provide personalised advice on safe sex practices and contraception options.
Treatment Options for STDs
Treatment for sexually transmitted infections depends on the specific infection and your individual health circumstances. Our doctors will work with you to create a care plan that is tailored to your needs and respectful of your experience.
Some infections can be treated effectively with medication, while others may require ongoing management. Early diagnosis and following your doctor’s recommendations can help protect your health and prevent complications. Our team can also advise on partner notification and safe practices to help prevent transmission and support your overall well-being. If necessary, we can refer you to specialised services or allied health providers for additional support.
Fees & Medicare Rebate
Some sexual health services may be bulk billed or have no out-of-pocket cost for eligible patients, while others may incur out-of-pocket fees. For example, some procedures such as contraceptive insertions or additional treatments may not be fully covered.
Standard fees apply for consultations with our GPs. Our friendly team will always inform you of any out-of-pocket costs and Medicare rebates that apply before we proceed with any treatment or services. This way, you have a clear understanding of the costs involved.
For a comprehensive list of our fees, please see our Fees Page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you still have questions about treatment and care available for diabetes? No problem! Here are the most commonly asked questions our GPs receive about diabetes treatment in Brisbane.
It depends on the type of infection. Some STIs, like chlamydia, gonorrhoea and trichomoniasis, are caused by bacteria or parasites and can usually be cured with the right treatment. Others, such as herpes or HIV, are managed rather than cured, meaning treatment helps control the virus and reduce symptoms or transmission, but it stays in the body.
Hepatitis B and hepatitis C are both viral infections that affect the liver, but they’re caused by different viruses and spread in slightly different ways. Hepatitis B is often passed through sexual contact, sharing personal items like razors, or from mother to baby during childbirth.
Hepatitis C is more commonly spread through blood-to-blood contact, such as sharing needles. It’s less commonly passed on through sexual contact, but the risk can be higher if there’s a chance of blood being present - for example during rough sex, sex when someone has genital sores, or sex during menstruation.
It depends on your circumstances. If you have new or multiple partners, it’s recommended every 6-12 months, or sooner if you have symptoms.
Absolutely. All consultations and test results are completely confidential.
Yes. In fact, many STDs have no symptoms. Routine screening is the best way to know your status.
Most results come back within a few days. Your doctor will let you know how you’ll receive them and discuss next steps if needed.
Our doctors will explain your results, discuss treatment options, and support you through any follow-up care. Most STDs are easily treatable.
It’s usually a good idea for partners to have a check-up as well. This helps reduce the risk of passing infections back and forth. Your GP can give you practical advice on how to approach these conversations.
Taking care of your sexual health isn’t just about preventing infections - it’s also about feeling comfortable, informed and confident in your relationships. Staying on top of regular check-ups, knowing what’s normal for your body, and seeking care promptly if something doesn’t feel right are all simple ways to protect your health.
